The deadlines to sign up for the Wayne County Reads bus trip to Washington, D.C., and to enter the "Sunflower" essay contest have been extended until Feb. 3

Wayne County Reads is sponsoring the March 18-19 bus trip to visit the Holocaust Museum and other historical attractions. People going on the trip have been asked to read the book "Night," about the Holocaust.

The cost of the trip is $225 per person for a twin room, $215 for a triple and $285 for a single. Call the Wayne County Public Library at 735-1824 or stop by the main library at 1001 E. Ash St. to make a reservation or to obtain more information.

The deadline for the essay contest, sponsored by Wayne County Reads Committee and Wayne County Public Schools, is also Feb. 3. The contest, based on Simon Wiesenthal's book "The Sunflower," is open to students in grades 9-11 as well as students who study at home. Essays must be no more than 500 words and typed. Wayne County Public School students should submit essays to their English teachers. Non-public school students should call 750-2297 to enter.

Winning essays will receive gift certificates. All essays will be displayed at Berkeley Mall in February and honored during a Wayne County Reads reception in March.
