Store robbed
Two black teenagers, one armed with a handgun, shot a man Monday night during an attempted robbery of a grocery store, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The suspects entered the Fourth Street Grocery at 815 Fourth St. at about 8:43 p.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money, the report said. One suspect gave the other the handgun, and the armed teen then shot a customer as he was pulling money from his pocket.
The victim, Delton Edgar Thompson, 56 of Goldsboro, was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
The suspects then fled east without getting any money, police said. The shooter was described as being about 17 years old, and he wore a black jacket with a fur collar, a gray T-shirt and black pants. The other teen was described as being 17, and he wore all black clothes with a hooded sweatshirt.
More charges
PRINCETON -- A Wayne County man faces two felony charges from Princeton police after he was arrested Friday following a wreck in Goldsboro.
The sport utility vehicle that Linwood Ray Boykin Jr. was driving had been reported stolen from A to Z Auto Sales in Princeton, Police Chief Eddie Lewis said Monday. The SUV was damaged after a rear-end collision on U.S. 70 West near Claridge Nursery Road.
Lewis charged Boykin, 21, of Talbert Drive, with breaking and entering and vehicle larceny. He was to be taken to the Johnston County Courthouse in Smithfield, where an additional secured bond would be set.
When Boykin was arrested by Goldsboro police, he was charged with one felony count each of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine and larceny and two felony counts of possession of stolen goods. He was charged later by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $38,000 secured bond.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with two felony drug violations.
Sherrod Darden, 30, and Kibula Devore Mizzelle, 35, were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine after a search of their apartment on Alpha Court. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Darden and Ms. Mizzelle were arrested after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
About $4,600 worth of cocaine and $720 were seized during the search.
An inmate at Neuse Correctional Institution on Stevens Mill Road was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and possession of cocaine in a prison. Dexter Ray Cooper, 41, was given a secured bond of $6,000.
The N.C. Department of Corrections assisted in the case.
4 hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $21,300 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 6:15 p.m. Monday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Cashwell Drive, Goldsboro police said. Timothy J. Randall Jr., 22, of Avon, Ohio, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Barry Wade Harper, 41, of Deep Run.
*State Highway Patrol Trooper R.T. Edwards ran into a beaver that was crossing N.C. 222 at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, the Highway Patrol said. Edwards was not injured in the accident, about a mile east of Eureka near Red Hill Road. But his patrol car had about $800 in damages.
*Three people were injured and their sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 1 a.m. Sunday on Lees Country Club Road near U.S. 117 Alternate, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Franco Lara, 21, and a passengers. Javier Mendoza, 27, both of Waller Road, Mount Olive, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other passenger, April Young, 21, of Waller Road, was listed today in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Lara was charged with reckless driving after the SUV had run off the left side out of control in a left curve, struck a bank and overturned five times, the report said. The SUV, registered to Joaquin Nunez Sanchez of Faison, was valued at $9,000.
*Damage was estimated at $6,000 in a one-vehicle wreck at 5:15 p.m. Saturday on N.C. 55 near Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. The eastbound driver, Higinio Juarez Vasquez, 28, of Washington, N.C., was charged with exceeding a safe speed. He said a tire may have blown out and he lost control. His pickup truck ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned, the report said.
Man assaulted
A Goldsboro man was struck Monday with a baseball bat in the 200 block of South Leslie Street, and the alleged assailant was charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats.
Michael Urich, 19, did not need hospital treatment, a Wayne Memorial spokeswoman said.
Urich told police that he had argued with a woman, then left and returned from a store. At that time, the woman was waiting outside with the bat.
Schantel Greenfield, 33, of Leslie Street was arrested and charged. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
School break-in
About $3,350.50 worth of property and cash have been stolen from rooms in the Wayne County Schools Administration building at 2001 Royall Avenue, Goldsboro police reported.
A laptop computer, a desktop computer with a monitor and a keyboard, a hand-held computer, a digital camera, keys and $133.50 were stolen between Friday and Monday, the report said.
The thief had used an exterior ladder to climb up, smashed a second-floor window to get inside, pried open an interior door and entered at least five rooms, the report said. Damages were set at $200. A bathroom also was ransacked.
