Goldsboro home
damaged in fire
A home at 915 E. Elm St. was damaged heavily Sunday in a predawn fire bedroom fire, according to a Goldsboro Fire Department report.
The owner and resident, Vincent Weeks, escaped the fire that caused about $85,000 in damages.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said the fire "appeared to have started in the bedroom. Weeks stated that he was in the bathroom when he heard the fire alarm going off. When he came out, the bedroom was on fire. Weeks stated that he left a small TV on the bed."
Thirteen firefighters answered the 12:48 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed more than two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $60,000 to the home and $25,000 to contents. The home was valued at $70,000, and contents were valued at $30,000.
Accident leads
to many charges
A 21-year-old man was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police and charged with five felony offenses after a traffic collision on U.S. 70 West near Claridge Nursery Road.
Linwood Ray Boykin Jr., 21, of Talbert Drive was charged with two felony counts of possession of stolen goods and one felony count of larceny, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping or selling cocaine.
Boykin also was charged by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with two felonies, breaking and entering and larceny.
Boykin was injured in the wreck at 2:55 p.m. He was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with failure to reduce speed and fictitious registration after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was identified as Gary Wayne Young, 30, of Selah Church Road, Four Oaks. Damages were set at $3,800.
Assault charged
A 25-year-old Goldsboro woman was cut with a razor-like knife Saturday in one of three separate incidents, according to Goldsboro police reports.
The woman, Nakeatta Nicole Jones, told police that she had argued with a woman at about 2:15 p.m. in the suspect's home, then fell to the floor and was cut four times. She was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said.
The resident, Evelyn Gray Exum, 59, of Olivia Lane, was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting serious injury. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,000 secured bond.
In the other reports:
*A couple gave a ride to three people Sunday night to the 1100 block of Poplar Street. Two people got out, but the third person opened fire at the car, damaging the radiator, grill, two tires, a bumper and a door. Damages were estimated at $850 to the car, registered to Tamara Greenfield of Goldsboro, the report said. The gunman was described as black, about 18 years old, 5-feet-2 and 130 pounds with black hair.
*Six car windows were smashed, and a door and a window were damaged Saturday in the 600 block of Whitted Court after a domestic dispute. Damage was set at $900 to the car, registered to Markita Mumford of Goldsboro. Damage to Gloria Jones' home was put at $425. The suspect was described as black, about 35 years old, 5-feet-5 and 210 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.
Burglary, assault
Several men, some armed with handguns, barged into a home Friday night in the 700 block of Waller Road and assaulted the resident, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Douglas Lee Tittle, 54, was struck with a flashlight, the report said. He was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
A witness told deputies that the assailants were four black men who had parked down the road and had run to Tittle's home. Tittle said there were two suspects and one was Hispanic.
Thefts probed
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A total of 135 compact discs, a digital camera, a coded car key and a checkbook were stolen between Wednesday and Saturday from a car in the Berkeley Mall parking lot, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Juhari Naurice Christopher of Goldsboro, said the thief stole his car keys to enter his auto. The stolen items were valued at $3,695.
*Two televisions, two DVD players, jewelry, video-game equipment, a microwave oven and a knife set were stolen between Sept. 14 and Saturday from an apartment in the 200 block of Sheridan Forest Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Elizabeth Wickdire, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,970. No sign of forced entry was reported.
*Jewelry, video-game equipment, a laptop computer, 10 DVD movies, $30 in quarters and blank checks were stolen Friday from a home in the 100 block of Spring Branch Road, deputies said. The resident, W.B. Noll, put a $3,281 value on the stolen property.
*Jewelry and three ceramic elephants were stolen and a couch and an end table were damaged Friday in a home in the 100 block of Dotsie Drive, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, Robert Michael Beaman, estimated the stolen property's value at $208 and damages at $375.
*Twelve reels of copper wiring were stolen between Tuesday and Friday from Weeks Electric Co. at 475 Ebenezer Church Road, deputies said. The wire was valued at $2,375.
Pedestrian struck
A pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck at 9:52 a.m. Saturday at North Street and Patetown Road, Goldsboro police said. Willie George Neal, 40, of Belfast Avenue was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
The report said Neal was going south and was struck by an eastbound pickup that was driven by Huerta Modesto Castaneda, 36, of Charlie Braswell Road. No charges were filed. The truck sustained about $400 in damages.
Missing
A 16-year-old girl was reported missing Sunday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Alicia Eileen Stronza of 517 Johnson Branch Road was described as white, 5-feet-8 and 140 pounds with long brown hair, brown eyes and an olive complexion. She was seen last at 7 p.m. Saturday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Clarification
The people involved Friday in a traffic collision in the Food Lion parking lot on N.C. 111 South were incorrectly identified in Sunday's edition. The driver, David Martin Trail, 75, of Lynn Avenue, had collided with his wife, Barbara Trail, 71. His foot slipped from the brake onto the gas and their van collided with a shopping cart that his wife was pushing, the report said.
