They've earned their As

The Golden A awards, given annually to restaurants and foodstands that earned 95 percent or higher throughout the year, were presented to 135 recipients Tuesday night at the Wayne Center.

It was the eighth year for the awards program, based on scores given during the year's health inspections by the Wayne County Health Department. Ben King was recognized as the "father of the Golden A's" for having been instrumental in bringing the program to Wayne County.

Top winners in the five categories were announced first. Schlotzsky's Deli won in the restaurant category with a score of 100; In and Out Convenience Store and Quik Mart in Mount Olive, tied in the foodstand category; The Meadows, claimed the institutional food services crown with a score of 99.8; Food Lion in Pikeville, won top meat market with a score of 99.1; and there was a three-way tie in the school lunchroom category between Eastern Wayne Elementary, Edgewood Community Developmental and Meadow Lane Elementary schools, all maintaining a 100 percent average for the year.

Worth Heath, food and lodging program specialist, said the numbers were down for food services qualifying for Golden A awards this year. Last year, 168 awards were given out as compared with 135 this year, which he partially attributed to the closing of nine Winn-Dixie stores in the county.

Speakers for the evening included two who could share firsthand what the Golden A program has meant to the food service industry in Wayne County.

Chris Rarick of Schlotzsky's Deli said his business has been blessed to receive a 100 percent score 10 times in a row and has been winner in the restaurant category for the past five years.

"The Golden A has been a trademark to us that we strive for. I have learned from experience that food is nothing to play with," he said.

Sam McNeil, manager of Food Lion on Spence Avenue, said the market and deli at his store had won the Golden A in recent years despite several changes in management and department heads, demonstrating a pride and consistency in service.

"When I go into an establishment and it has a Golden A, it's instant credibility. I know they're doing right things and it's a safe environment," he said.
