Mobile home fire

A malfunctioning heater was blamed Wednesday night for a fire that caused about $1,500 in damages to a mobile home at 551 Watery Branch Church Road, a fire official said.

The unidentified occupants escaped the fire in the single-wide, rental home, owned by Jim Barnes of Fremont and valued at $5,000.

Eureka Fire Chief Mike Brock said there was a fire earlier in the day and the owner had removed part of the heating system.

"They didn't realize that embers were still in there and they caught the floor and insulation on fire," Brock said.

About 12 Eureka and 12 Faro volunteers answered the 10:20 p.m. call and remained for 40 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. Each department brought three trucks. Fremont also responded but was turned around.

*A DVD player, coveralls and a knife were stolen Wednesday after a door glass was smashed at a home in the 1900 block of Emmaus Church Road, deputies said. The resident, Kenneth Wayne Hall Jr., estimated the value of the stolen property at $140 and damage at $50.

Purse stolen

A purse with a blue topaz pendant, a cell phone, a wallet and personal papers was stolen Wednesday from an office in the Wayne County Board of Education administration building at 2001 Royall Avenue, according to a Goldsboro police report.

Shirley J. Richardson of Goldsboro told police that someone had used her debit card. The value of the stolen property was set at $599. The theft occurred between 2:30 p.m. and 5:20 p.m.
