Buses vandalized
Twelve school buses and 12 building doors were vandalized between Wednesday and Thursday at Eastern Wayne High School, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported. A substance like liquid cement had been poured into the ignition switches of the buses, and it hardened, the report said. Locks in the door to the gymnasium and the automotive department had the same substance. Obscene graffiti was spray-painted on a wall in the gym. Damage was estimated at $240 to the buses, $150 to the locks and $200 to the walls.
School bus wreck
Mirrors on a truck and a Wayne County school bus struck and glass from them struck a third vehicle Monday on Dollard Town Road near Ditchbank Road, the Highway Patrol said. None of the three drivers and 57 bus passengers was injured. The westbound truck driver, John Nelson Adams, 51, of New Hope Road, LaGrange, was charged with driving while his license was revoked. The eastbound school bus was driven by Mary Adele Miller, 28, of Marlette Drive. The other westbound motorist was listed as William Junior Graham, 34, of New Hope Road. Damages totaled an estimated $900.
Store robbed
A convenience store was robbed Thursday by two people, one armed with a handgun, of about $25, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
A woman clerk at the El Mexicano store at 2363 New Hope Road told deputies that a white man and a white woman entered the store at 11:35 a.m. The man displayed a small handgun, and the woman opened her purse and ordered the clerk to put money in it, the report said. The suspects got only $25 and fled east, the report said. Sheriff's Cpl. Joe Smith tracked the suspects with his dog to a field, where they may have left in a vehicle.
The man wore a black hooded sweatshirt, black gloves and a black bandana. The woman was described as having green eyes and brown hair, wearng a long-sleeved black-and-white hooded sweatshirt, black gloves and a black bandana.
Arson charges filed
A Mount Olive couple was arrested Thursday by Wayne County sheriff's detectives and charged with two felony offenses in connection with the burning of a home.
Christina "Kristy" Swinson Sutton, 30, and Larry Kristin Sutton, 33, both of West John Street, were charged with burning a house and insurance fraud.
They are accused of burning a home at 1928 Thunder Swamp Road on June 2. Christina Sutton also was held on an outstanding arrest order for a worthless check. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of secured bonds totaling $4,500. Larry Sutton was jailed in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond. The Wayne County fire marshal's office, Smith Chapel Volunteer Fire Department and Mount Olive Police Department assisted in the case.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Seven fishing rods and a rod and reel were stolen between Monday and Thursday from a home in the 3400 block of Salem Church Road, deputies said. The owner, Randy Stephen Lanier of Goldsboro, put a $3,055 value on the property.
*A tool box with tools, about 100 compact discs, eight necklaces and $12.50 in cash were stolen Thursday from a home and barns in the 100 block of Talbert Drive, deputies said. The resident, D.C. Martinez, put a $1,090 value on the property, in addition to the money.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A laptop computer was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from an office at Wayne Community College, police said. The thief had broken a door glass to get inside. The computer was valued at $3,000. Damage was put at $250.
*An unknown amount of cigarettes was stolen before dawn today after a door glass was smashed at the Wilco Hess gas station at 400 E. Ash St., police said. A cash register drawer and 30 lighters also were stolen but were recovered. Damage was set at $300.
Missing
A 41-year-old woman has been reported missing by relatives to Goldsboro police. Rhonda Vanessa Johnson, who does not have a home address, was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 105 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a brown complexion. She has not been seen since November, when she was wearing a dark sweater, black pants and black boots. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
Clarification
A report in the Dec. 30 issue about a wreck on Dec. 28 on Old Mount Olive Road near Pecan Road contained incorrect information. One northbound driver, Eddie Mack Thompson, 60, of Waldrop Road, Dudley, was starting to make a left turn into a driveway at the same time another driver, Tammy Lynn Gregory, 36, of N.C. 581, Fremont, was passing him. The earlier report had the names reversed. Thompson was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $3,350.
