Workers transplant tobacco on the Major Ivey farm in northern Duplin County last spring. Eastern North Carolina growers are expected to plant more acres of tobacco this year, as the free market opened by the end of the federal price-support program enters its second year. Farmers will need to plant more acres to maintain a profit as prices have dropped, experts say.
