Officers arrest
man in church
Goldsboro police officers responded before dawn today to a burglar alarm at First Presbyterian Church at 1101 E. Ash St. and later arrested a man who was inside.
During an external check of the church, Officer Raymond Yeager found a broken window on the front of the church, where entry was gained to the building.
Officers Richard Nash, Ronald McDuffie, Chris Melvin and Yeager set up a perimeter around the church. Officer Steve Harmon and Sgt. Trey Ball searched the church and found the man in an upstairs classroom, where he was arrested. Two portable stereos were stolen and recovered in another area, the report said.
Derrick Anthony Williamson, 38, was charged with felony breaking and entering into a place of worship, felony larceny and misdemeanor possession of a concealed weapon. Williamson, who did not disclose a home address, was taken before a magistrate and placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*William Jovan Maye, 24, of South Slocumb Street was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm and misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun at a Goldsboro motel. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
*Recko Voncarroll Brooks, 23, was charged with possession of marijuana in a prison, Wayne Correctional Institution. His secured bond was set at $10,000.
Accidents
Damages were estimated at $27,600 in four weekend traffic accidents in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A rental car was left abandoned and damaged after a wreck at 3:15 a.m. Sunday on Dixie Trail near Rawlings Street. A report said the car ran off the road and struck a tree. The driver fled. Damage was put at $10,000 to the car, which was owned by Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
*Damages were estimated at $5,600 at 10:40 a.m. Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on West Grantham Street near the U.S. 70-117 bypass. Lori H. Gibson, 24, of Wilson Road, Fremont, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:20 p.m. Saturday in the Firestone tire store parking lot at 305 N. Berkeley Blvd. John Daniel Skidmore, 24, of Central Heights Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Damages were estimated at more than $5,000 in a three-vehicle accident at 6:18 p.m. Friday on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 bypass, near West Ash Street. Fred Lemuel Overman, 67, of Sleepy Hollow Road, Fremont, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Assault charge
A 20-year-old Mount Olive man was slashed with a machete Sunday, and another man was arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and charged with the crime.
Tyrin Montric Jones of South Chestnut Street was struck on the head and thumb at about 2:10 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of Flowers Road, near Mount Olive, the report said. His condition was not immediately known.
The resident, Terrakus Antonio Davis, 22, was arrested and charged with a felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Thirty pairs of shoes, clothing, video-game equipment and a DVD player were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a home in the 100 block of Lamm Drive, deputies said. The resident, F.Y. James, put a $3,950 value on the property.
*A home stereo system was stolen between Dec. 19 and Sunday after a window was smashed in at a home in the 500 block of Summerlin Drive, deputies said. The owner, Edward Jonathan Tucker of Seven Springs, put a $200 value on the stereo and set damage at $200.
*A stereo system was stolen between Friday and Sunday from a home in the 100 block of Annette Drive, deputies said. The resident, S.M. Walls, said the system was worth $1,500.
*A thief inflicted about $200 in damages to a truck window in the 600 block of Mount Carmel Church Road in order to steal a flashlight, valued at $20, deputies said. The owner and resident, Dale Dwayne Perry, said the theft occurred between Saturday and Sunday.
*A .40 caliber rifle, a portable DVD player and a sweatshirt were stolen between Dec. 22 and Saturday after a door was forced open at a home in the 100 block of Hopesway Drive, deputies said. The resident, Wilbert Lee Evans, estimated the value of the stolen property at $470.
*Three windows were smashed between Dec. 10 and Saturday at a home under repair in the 100 block of Orchestra Lane, deputies said. Damage was set at $2,700. The home is owned by Safeguard Properties of Brooklyn Heights, Ohio.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A man placed an order at the Waffle Place at 702 Corporate Drive on Sunday and then punched the buttons on the cash register, police said. After several tries, he hit the button to open the drawer, grabbed $153 and fled, the report said. Customers chased the man and held him until police arrived. Freddie Simms Jr., 41, of Maple Street was charged with larceny. He also was held on a second larceny charge, assault on a female, communicating threats and injury to personal property. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,100 secured bond.
*Gunshots inflicted about $50 in damages on Sunday to a door glass at a home in the 600 block of Devereaux Street, police said. No one was hurt. An occupant said the shots might have stemmed from a previous argument that he had with another person.
Sex offense
A 53-year-old man from Fuquay-Varina was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony first-degree sex offense in Wake County. Miles Milton was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday in Wake County.
Missing
A 16-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Saturday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Tiffany Marie Manning of 902-A Hopkins St. was described as black, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When she was seen last at 11:30 a.m. Friday, she was wearing a pink shirt, black pants and a black coat. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
