Flim-flam
A Wayne County man sent a $2,850 deposit by wire to a person in England for a car, but the auto was never shipped to the United States, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Jesse Alan Parks, 39, of Four Oaks told deputies that he found the 2003 Nissan 250Z in a bargain trader magazine. He said he was told to send the deposit under a fake name to a Myra Kaye Frederick so that the seller could not access the money until the car arrived. He said he wired the money Dec. 16.
The report said the deposit was to pay for shipping charges and the car was to be shipped from London by Dec. 24. He said he was notified by Western Union that the money was picked up Dec. 17. He said he has e-mailed the suspect but has not received a response.
Sheriff's Detective Lt. Tom Effler said today that the fake name should have been "a big red flag." He said buyers should check the references of the sellers. "I feel for the victim," he said, "but people should use common sense."
Accidents
Five people, including two pedestrians, were injured and damages were estimated at $15,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-car collision at 7:50 p.m. Monday at Royall Avenue and Sunburst Drive, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Lydia Nichelle Paige, 19, of Allen Street, and the other driver, Brian William Fenech, 38, and his passenger, Brianna Fenech, 10, both of Renee Drive, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released, according to a hospital spokesman. Ms. Paige was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A 6-year-old boy was struck at 5:03 p.m. Monday by a sport utility vehicle in the Pinewood Square parking lot at 1002 N. Spence Ave., police said. Nazjalle Wooten of Daffodil Drive, Dudley, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, where he was treated and released. The report said a witness had said the boy had darted from between two parked cars and ran into the side of the SUV. The driver, George Lester Harper, 52, of Oak Circle, was not charged and his SUV was not damaged.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 in a one-car wreck at 2:10 p.m. Monday at U.S. 13 and U.S. 117, police said. Sonny Luciano Madrid, 22, of Wright Brothers Avenue, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A pedestrian crossing U.S. 70 at Oak Forest Road was struck at 8:03 p.m. Dec. 18 by a car, the Highway Patrol said in a report filed today. Christopher Eugene Grant, 37, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, where he was treated and released. The westbound driver, Osborne McDonald Tripp, 73, of Vail Road, Pikeville, was not charged, and his car was not damaged.
Break-in
About 300 DVDs, a combination DVD player and video cassette recorder and a laptop computer were stolen between Friday and Monday from an apartment in the 500 block of Boxwood Lane, Goldsboro police reported. The resident, C.M. Harvey, estimated the value of the stolen property at $6,600. The thief had pried open a door to get inside, the report said.
Missing
A 16-year-old girl was reported missing today by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Jazzmine Daniel Lee of 310 Spoonbill Drive was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 135 pounds with shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes.
When she was seen last at 11:30 p.m. Monday, she was wearing a pullover with C.B. Aycock on it. No other clothing description was available. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Body found
The body of a 48-year-old woman was found Monday on the floor of her home at 2398 U.S. 13 North, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported. The victim, identified as Lynn Coker Benton, was found at 2:30 p.m. by her housemate, Dale Turnage. Sheriff's Detective Lt. Tom Effler said death was attributed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
