An intense investigation by Goldsboro police and the State Bureau of Investi-gation into a fatal shooting on Saturday led to the arrest of a 33-year-old Goldsboro man on an open charge of murder.

Reginald D. Reid, 37, of 305 Fussell St., was found shot to death Saturday by police officers responding to a call about 12:35 p.m. in the 1700 block of Peachtree Street.

"When the call came in, we had no witnesses, no motive and no suspects," police Investigator Neil Lynch said today.

The first officer to arrive at the scene, Arian Southerland, had answered a call about an unresponsive person. Reid was found slumped over in his car. The car had numerous bullet holes in it.

Police officers and investigators and special agents from the SBI gathered evidence at the scene and developed a suspect.

David L. Applewhite of Royall Avenue was interviewed by police and then released about four hours after the shooting.

Lynch said that after an interview of another person, police obtained a warrant for Applewhite's arrest. He turned himself in to authorities and was charged with the murder less than seven hours after it had happened.

Applewhite was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond. His first court appearance to determine his legal representation was scheduled for Tuesday.

Investigators said Applewhite and Reid had had a history of disagreements, including an argument earlier Saturday.
