Committee will present shelter plan

The Wayne County Animal Control Advisory Committee will present its findings for building a new animal shelter during the Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday.
Jean Hollowell, a member of the committee, said the group will offer guidelines and procedures for the construction of a new shelter along with recommendations on how to pay for it.
Over the past few months, animal rights supporters have collected signatures on a petition calling for a new shelter to be built with county dollars. Leaders of Concerned Citizens of Wayne County say they expect to have nearly 10,000 signatures on the petition by Tuesday.
In other business, the commissioners will consider an agreement for the protection, development and improvement of forest land in the county. According to the agreement, the state's Department of Environment and Natural Resources would hire a county forester or county forest ranger to control forest fires, enforce fire laws and improve the local woodlands through reforestation.
The county would pay the state agency 40 percent of the total cost of the ranger's salary, benefits and expenses, according to the agreement. The county's portion would be $83,550 annually.
The commissioners' meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the Wayne County Courthouse.
Commissioners also will consider:
*Increasing the charge for some emergency medical ambulance services. The proposed changes would increase the cost of basic life support and advanced life support by $70. Officials say the increase would bring Wayne's charges in line with those in surrounding counties. The costs for disposable supplies, oxygen, intravenous supplies and treatment with no transport would remain the same.
*Approving a resolution that would allow the county's finance department to establish a money market fund with Wachovia Bank. County Finance Director Norman Ricks has said the fund would give the county another investment tool.
*A petition to include a Milwood Pointe Road in the state maintenance system. The road is a part of Mill's Manor subdivision northwest of Saulston.
