Teen pleads guilty to drug thefts at hospital

A Wayne County teenager charged with stealing drugs from the pharmacy at Wayne Memorial Hospital pleaded guilty today in Superior Court to lesser charges as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
Thomas Bradshaw II, 16, had been charged with four felony counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and four counts of possession with intent to sell and deliver the substances.
He pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors: possession of marijuana and possession of Schedule I controlled substances.
Judge Ripley Rand sentenced Bradshaw to 45 days in jail but suspended the sentence on condition he be placed on unsupervised probation for two years, complete 120 hours of community service and pay court costs.
Rand barred Bradshaw from entering the hospital during his probation, except to receive treatment.
The drugs involved were the painkillers oxycodone, methodone and hydromorphine, investigators said.
Bradshaw was working as a junior volunteer at the hospital at the time of the thefts. He had said he was coerced into taking the drugs by someone who had threatened to harm his family if he didn't comply.
The thefts happened in July. Investigators said Bradshaw used another employee's security password to access a drug-dispensing machine.
Bradshaw's father is a vice president at the hospital. The Bradshaw family had no comment on the resolution of the case.
