by firemen stops
dangerous blaze
A quick response by firefighters from four departments on Tuesday night stopped a potentially dangerous blaze from spreading and causing enormous damage at the GAF plant at 400 Old Mount Olive Road.
Two oil lines ruptured and ignited under pressure, Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Harrell said. When his department arrived, firefighters used the company's sky lift to try to cool the area with foam. He noted that an oil fire could not be put out with water.
Harrell summoned Dudley's ladder truck. Once Dudley volunteers arrived and set up the truck, Harrell said they extinguished the fire with foam within five minutes.
"It had big potential," Harrell said, "with LP gas tanks nearby."
He said the plant employees' knowledge of what the building had was a big help.
Harrell said damage to the building was about $2,500 but damage to the products was much more.
Twenty Mar Mac volunteers answered the 8:45 p.m. call with three trucks. Dudley assisted with 12 people and two trucks, Arrington brought 15 people and three trucks, and Thoroughfare sent one truck and 10 volunteers.
"Everyone worked well together," Harrell said.
The Mar Mac chief said the Dudley ladder was the right apparatus to reach the fire because hand lines could not get to it.
"That's why we have so much equipment," Harrell said. He added that each department could not afford to have all the different pieces of equipment.
$13,000 stolen
in store break-in
Thieves stole almost $13,000 between Sunday and Monday from a safe at the Family Dollar store at 102 Five Points Road in Mar Mac, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The door glass had been smashed, an office door pried open and the safe cut open with a grinder, the report said.
A store manager told deputies that the clerk who had worked over the weekend was supposed to have deposited the cash in a bank.
A total of $12,808.85 was stolen, the report said. Damages were estimated at $500.
The break-in was the third along U.S. 117 South between Sunday night and Monday morning. The others were at the American Legion hall and the Neuse River Gun and Pawn Shop. A break-in also was attempted at the E-Z Mart convenience store.
Driver injured
in 4-car crash
A Goldsboro driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a four-vehicle collision Tuesday at Cashwell and Eastgate drives, Goldsboro police said.
Brandon Scott Kincaid, 17, of Meadowcrest Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with yield and seat-belt violations.
The report said collision happened like this:
The southbound sport utility vehicle that Kincaid was driving had collided with an eastbound SUV driven by Kisha P. Alabbaas, 27, of East Walnut Street. The force of the 12:14 p.m. collision knocked Kincaid from the seat to the floor, and he lost control of the SUV. Kincaid's SUV then careened into a parking lot, and it struck a parked car that was registered to Emily Rose Strickland of Charlie Southerland Road, Mount Olive, pushing it into another parked car that was registered to Danny Ray Rose of Linda Street, Princeton.
Meanwhile, a pedestrian was struck at 8:57 p.m. Tuesday by an unknown vehicle at George and West Walnut streets, police said. Herbert Lacurtis Holiday III, 25, of North James Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Holiday was walking east and was struck by a southbound auto.
15 wrecks in rain
Goldsboro police investigated 15 traffic collisions Monday on rain-slickened streets, but officers reported that none resulted from the weather. Four wrecks involved personal injury or high property damages. They included:
*Damages were estimated at $7,250 in a four-vehicle collision at 3:20 p.m. Monday on East New Hope Road near Lewis Drive, police said. One driver, Daniel Mantilla, 17, of Ryan Boulevard, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other drivers were identified as Adam Joseph Bouchard, 18, of Bayleaf Drive; Paige Lorene Nelson, 16, of East Pine Street, and Jessica Rae Summerlin, 16, of West Hill Street.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $9,000 in a three-vehicle crash at 2:40 p.m. Monday at North William Street and Patetown Road, police said. One driver, Edward Charles Williams, 39, of Herman Street, and his passenger, Kevonta King, 23, of Courtyard Circle, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A northbound driver, Lisa Faye Reedy, 31, of Foxwood Place, was charged with a yield violation. The report said. Ms. Reedy was making a left turn onto Patetown Road and her sport utility vehicle collided with Williams' southbound car. The impact pushed Williams' car into a stopped eastbound auto that was driven by Johnnie B. Musgrave, 65, of Saulston Road.
*A Goldsboro motorist was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 6:40 p.m. Monday at West Holly and North George streets, police said. Juwanna L. Brown, 23, of West Oak Street was released after emergency-room treatment. She also was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign and no liability insurance. The report said Ms. Brown's eastbound car had collided with a southbound pickup truck that was driven by Kimberly Sue Beck-Pelt, 36, of Chafin Road. Damages were set at $3,000.
*A northbound driver was injured in a two-car crash at 8:38 a.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and the entrance to Wayne Community College, police said. Edsel Lofton, 47, of Hare Road was released after emergency-room treatment. The report said a driver leaving the college, Heather Nicole Waters, 19, of Smithfield, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were put at $4,500.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Both cars were demolished in a crash at 10 a.m. Saturday at N.C. 55 and N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, Masao Kitsuya, 45, of Cashwell Drive, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said Kitsuya's car had collided with an eastbound auto that was driven by Luis Alberto Cruz-Figueroa, 21, of Atkinson. The cars were valued at $11,500. Neither driver was hurt.
*Damages were estimated at $11,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 10:56 a.m. Saturday on Big Daddy's Road, east of N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound driver, Cynthia B. Worrell, 50, of Beverly Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Worrell was making a left turn and her minivan had collided with an eastbound pickup truck that was driven by Billy Everette Pate, 61, of Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 11:28 p.m. Friday on U.S. 117 near Booker Street, the Highway Patrol said. Jean D. Aycock, 61, of True Vine Road, Pikeville, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A southbound driver, Walter Lee Bunch, 54, of Branch Street, Fremont, was charged with improper equipment. The report said a utility trailer that Bunch was towing had come loose, crossed the center line and struck Ms. Aycock's oncoming northbound car. Damages were set at $3,300.
*A truck overturned during a right turn from N.C. 581 to Arrington Bridge Road, resulting in about $5,000 in damages at 8:57 a.m. Friday, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Antonio Fitzgerald Cox, 40, of Capps Bridge Road, Princeton, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*A car was destroyed in a wreck at 3:46 p.m. Friday on Hood Swamp Road near Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Marco Antonio Torres, 17, of Hood Swamp Road, was charged with driving left of center. The report said the car that Torres was driving had crossed the center line, the driver overcorrected the steering and the car skidded sideways off the right side and overturned into a driveway. The car was valued at $6,000.
*A driver was injured in a three-vehicle crash at 1 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Old Grantham Road, the Highway Patrol said. Samara Faye Holmes, 32, of Dunwoody Drive, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. Another driver, Delbert Harold Benson, 26, of Richlands, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The report said Ms. Holmes had stopped in the left, southbound lane, and another motorist, Robert Wade Koen, 37, of Antioch Road, had slowed in the right turn lane.
*A motorcyclist from Mount Olive was injured in a wreck at 4:57 p.m. Thursday on Indian Springs Road, north of N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. Jack Darol Knox, 44, of Pineland Avenue was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the eastbound bike had run off the right side, struck a ditch and started to roll over. Damage was put at $6,000 to the motorcycle.
Man assaulted
A man said he was assaulted before dawn today in the 500 block of South Audubon Avenue, and then his car was stolen, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Robin Earl Locklear, 27, of Goldsboro told police that the suspects clubbed his head, stomped his hand, grabbed his car keys and drove off. Locklear did not require hospital treatment. The silver, four-door 1997 Ford Taurus was valued at $2,000.
In another report, a red and silver, two-door 1996 Dodge Ram pickup truck was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the 300 block of Vann Smith Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, Charles Wells Smith Jr., put a $7,000 value on his truck.
