Pikeville votes to go back to twice-weekly trash collection

The Pikeville Town Board decided Monday to restart twice-weekly garbage pickup for the town. In September, commissioners voted to cut back garbage pickup to once weekly in light of fuel cost considerations.
Pikeville's new sewer plant should be in operation by the end of December, Town Administrator Lonnie Graves said. Paving related to the sewer system is expected to be completed by Dec. 19. Streets in the Collingwood neighborhood and Mill Street need to be re-paved after sewer lines have been upgraded.
Commissioners opted to open a certificate of deposit account with Heritage Bank, and will invest $529,000 at a rate of 4.6 percent. The account will consist of monies from the town's electrical and general funds.
Graves told commissioners that he has requested a study from the Army Corps of Engineers on the town's Blue Line drainage ditch.
Roger Rhodes, carpentry teacher at Charles B. Aycock High School offered to build five picnic tables to be placed in the Pikeville Park. Rhodes would build the tables at a cost of $600 for materials.
Graves is investigating the possibility of leasing approximately 60 acres of sprayfields to a private citizen, who would maintain the land.
