Ford appointed to state community college board

RALEIGH -- Jimmie E. Ford has been appointed to the state Board of Community Colleges by Gov. Mike Easley .
Ford, a former member of the state House and the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, is a retired associate vice president at Wayne Community College.
A self-employed motivational speaker, Ford graduated from Wayne Community College with a double major in business administration and mental health. He earned a bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences from Shaw University and a master's degree in adult education from North Carolina State University. He was employed at Wayne Community College for 37 years.
"It is an honor to serve on the state board. I am happy to be able to give back to a system that changed my life," Ford said in a statement.
H. Martin Lancaster, the president of the state Community College System, is also a Wayne County native. Lancaster said he was pleased to have someone of Ford's caliber on the board.
"Jimmie is an excellent addition to this group of dedicated individuals who are committed to making our community colleges the best in the country. His experience in the system and in local and state government will benefit the state board. We are thrilled to have him join us."
Ford will serves on the board's policy committee and on a special committee responding to recommendations made by the state auditor. His term ends June 30, 2011.
A deacon at Barnes Missionary Baptist Church, Ford is married to the former Priscilla Spruill. They have two children.
