Pedestrian struck
A pedestrian was listed today in fair condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville after he was struck by a car at South George and West Elm streets in Goldsboro.
Vernon Thompson, 44, of Brazil Street was hit at about 5:26 p.m. Monday as he stepped from the curb, Goldsboro police reported. He was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, stabilized and then transferred to Pitt Memorial.
The southbound driver, S. Reginald Kenan, 50, of Rose Hill, told officers that a man had stepped in front of the southbound sport utility vehicle that he was operating. Kenan, a former assistant district attorney for Wayne County, said he did not see the man until he was struck, the report said. No charges have been filed.
Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the SUV.
Robbery try
Two armed and masked black men tried to rob a Goldsboro woman Tuesday night as she tried to withdraw money from an automatic teller machine at 1503 Wayne Memorial Drive, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Thomasena Thompson told police that she had told the two men that she had no money and showed them a printed receipt showing that she had no money in her account.
The report said the two suspects then entered the van that Ms. Thompson was driving, pointed guns at two juveniles and demanded their money. When they did not get any cash, the two suspects fled.
2 drivers injured
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $8,500 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car collision at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday at North Jefferson and Edgerton streets, Goldsboro police said. Judy W. Pickett, 40, of Rollingwood Drive, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. She was charged with a stop-sign violation. The report said the westbound car that Ms. Pickett was driving had collided with a northbound auto that was driven by Eileen K. Warren, 43, of East Pine Street.
*A driver was injured and his sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 6:49 p.m. Sunday on N.C. 55 near Dobbersville Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ronald Lee Nettles, 35, of Smith Grady Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed after his SUV had hydroplaned on the wet road, crossed the center line out of control, run off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The SUV was valued at $3,000.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A thief removed the bolts that secure fencing around a Progress Energy substation between Oct. 30 and Tuesday and then stole about $1,500 worth of copper wire, sheriff's deputies said. Damage was estimated at $1,200 to the substation on Thoroughfare Road.
*Video-game equipment was stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Avon Court, deputies said. The resident, Alex Earl Newsome, put a $100 value on his property. No damage estimate was listed.
*A purple 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle has been stolen from a home in the 100 block of Colonel Warrick Road near Dudley, deputies said. The owner, Randy Ricko Oliver, said the bike was worth $11,000.
