Help for Katrina victims still sought

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College, in partnership with the Original Free Will Baptist Home Missions Board, is collecting non-perishable food items, toys, and monetary donations for the hurricane victims in Sandersville, Mississippi.
Thousands of people in areas hit by Hurricane Katrina are still without homes and are unable to rebuild. They have been displaced to other states and forced to start over with nothing to call their own. As of October, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics attributes 59,700 jobs lost to Katrina in Mississippi alone.
One of the English classes at Mount Olive College has initiated a project and are seeking donations until Dec. 12, of non-perishable food items, toys, and money as they "adopt" the citizens of Sandersville this holiday season.
"With your donations, the people of the Sandersville community, and the people they have taken in, can have warm, healthy holiday dinners and know that the people of Mount Olive are thinking of them during their difficult times," said Jenny Bancroft, director of the Teaching and Learning Center and teacher of the English class that launched the project.
"The victims of Hurricane Katrina and Ophelia still need our help. Our prayers, compassion, and charity cannot end. We can work together as a campus, as a community, and as a family in Christ to help our friends in need. We can help our neighbors have a memorable holiday season."
Donations can be dropped off at the Teaching and Learning Center at the Waylin Center on Michael Martin Drive beside the Sleep Inn. For more information on how to make a contribution, contact Ms. Bancroft at 658-7792.
