Franklin Baking Co. raised $5,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina with a barbecue at the business last week.
The bakery sold almost 1,000 plates of barbecue at the event, which raised money for the Flowers Foods Disaster Relief Fund.
Franklin is a subsidiary of Flowers, which has headquarters in Thomasville, Ga.
Tom Buffkin, the president of Franklin Baking, thanked employees and the community that supported the event.
We couldn't have reached this goal without the support of our great community and we're very thankful," Buffkin said, noting donations by Sam's Club, Sunburst Foods, Case Farms, Wal-Mart, Stevens Sausage Co., and Target. He also pointed to help from Jimmy Bryan, the owner of Sportsman's World.
Flower's Foods will match any donation to its fund, up to $250,000.
