Break-in solved
Goldsboro police officers responded before dawn today to a burglar alarm at a home in the 100 block of Banks Avenue and then arrested and charged a man for the crime.
After arriving at the home, B-shift officers contacted the victim, Edwina Carter, and found that a window had been shattered. No suspect was found inside the home.
Sgt. Mike West said officers searched the area and found a man walking nearby. The man fled, but he was captured in the 1700 block of Edgerton Street.
After investigating further, police charged Virgil Devon Cox of Dove Place with first-degree burglary, a felony, and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
Teen charged
A teenager was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony offenses in connection with the theft of $4,330 worth of firearms and a vehicle.
James Tyler Howell, 16, of Talton Road, Princeton, was charged with larceny, larceny of a vehicle and larceny of a firearm. He also was charged with misdemeanor injury to personal property. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $15,600.
The vehicle and the firearms were reported stolen Nov. 5, and a lawn mower was reported stolen Nov. 7 from the Rosewood community. Officers were notified Sunday about the location of the property, Detective Richard Winders said. Recovery of the property led to the arrest, the detective said.
A 14-year-old girl also was arrested, and she will be charged in a juvenile petition. She was not identified because of her age.
Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour and Deputy Larry Mitchell assisted in the case.
Cigarettes stolen
Eighty cartons of cigarettes, three boxes of cigars and two tanks of propane gas were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the Eureka Mini Mart at 2710 N.C. 222 East, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The cigarettes were valued at $2,240, the cigars at $60 and the propane tanks at $80 for a total of $2,380.
The thief entered the store through a window and damaged a cash register in order to take about $300 in cash, the report said. Damage was estimated at $200.
Multiple arrests and charges are pending, sheriff's detectives said today.
Shed destroyed
A wood heater was blamed Wednesday night for a fire that destroyed a storage building at 312 Brentwood Drive, Dudley, a fire official said.
Dudley Volunteer Fire Chief Kendall Lee said the resident had fired up a wood heater Wednesday afternoon and it may have ignited the 600-square-foot building. The shed was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
The building was valued at $12,000, and contents were valued at about $35,000, Lee said. The owner's name was not immediately available.
Fourteen Dudley firefighters were assisted by 10 from Mar Mac and 12 from Arrington. Each department brought two trucks.
13 charges
A 51-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with 13 felony offenses after she was indicted by the Wayne County Grand Jury.
Willa T. Thornton of Ukraine Drive, LaGrange, was charged with six counts each of forgery and uttering and one count of obtaining property by false pretense. She was released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.
Ms. Thornton was accused of cashing a counterfeit check and counterfeit money orders at a business on South Berkeley Boulevard, Investigator Dwayne E. Dean said.
Accidents
One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $10,600 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car, rear-end collision at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Parkway Drive, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Meredith Amber Heaton, 16, of Miller Road, Fremont, was charged with failure reduce to speed. The other motorist was identified as Gudran Bjorg Gylfordottir, 16, of Kelly Drive.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,100 in a three-vehicle crash at 12:41 p.m. Monday at N.C. 581 and Rosewood Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kelly Bernard Kinsey, 55, of Parkwood Drive, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A southbound driver, Christina Elaine Skowronski, 18, of Claridge Nursery Road, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said the car that Ms. Skowronski was driving had collided with Kinsey's westbound van and the impact sent the van into a stopped, eastbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Stephen Oscar Porter, 44, of N.C. 581.
False pretense
A 47-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Vicki Stout Thompson of Brightleaf Road was accused of turning in stolen merchandise to obtain a gift card from Belk's, Investigator Dwayne E. Dean said. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond. Officers M. Bronner and Claude Jackson assisted in the case.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these other reports:
*An oil furnace was stolen between Oct. 26 and Wednesday from a vacant rental home in the 100 block of North Slocumb Street, Goldsboro police said. The thief had damaged a window to get inside. The owner, Cheryl Alston of Goldsboro, said the furnace was worth $5,000. Damages were estimated at $75.
*An antique, single-shot shotgun was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a door glass was smashed at a home in the 1900 block of N.C. 222 East, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, David Yelverton, put a $150 value on the weapon and set damage at $50.
*A stereo system with a compact disc player was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a sport utility vehicle at Parnell Automotive Clinic on O'Berry Center Road, deputies said. The stereo system, valued at $2,200, was owned by Michael Eric Braswell of Goldsboro.
