CALYPSO -- Dr. Greg Day said today that he will accept the job of Calypso mayor.

Day was elected mayor when 11 voters wrote his name on the ballot during the municipal election held last week.

No one else received any votes for mayor. No one had filed for election in Calypso, including the incumbent town board members. Write-in votes determined the make-up of the new town board. Alan Story received 34 write-in votes, former mayor Tom Reaves 29, Richard Gerber 28, Jason Stevens 16 and incumbent town commissioner Rubylene Lambert 16 votes.

Day said he did not seek the position of mayor, and he didn't know about anybody planning to write him in to serve as mayor. He said he decided to accept the position after much prayer, conversations with town employees and advice from friends.

"I am one who believes that God leads people in a particular direction, even though the individual may not be responsive to that leading," he said. "As such, I felt in July of this year that my service to the community had reached its end. Little did I know that my set plans were about to change."
