Mobile home
destroyed by fire
A mobile home was destroyed in a fire believed to have been set by children, newborn puppies were killed in a barn fire and a home was damaged in another set fire, according to Wayne County fire officials.
Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Harrell said children were blamed for starting a fire in woods between two mobile homes in the 100 block of Colonel Warrick Drive.
The wind blew the fire into one home, destroying it and damaging the other, Harrell said.
Dudley, Mar Mac, Arrington, Thoroughfare and Mount Olive volunteers responded to the 3:30 p.m. alarm.
"The county is now sending three departments to structure fires," Harrell said. "We had plenty of people. It worked out fine."
The extra departments assisted after investigating a nearby wreck.
A light that was hanging from a dropcord to keep new-born puppies warm caught fire in a storage building, killing the puppies, a fire official said. The mother dog escaped.
Dudley Volunteer Fire Chief Kendall Lee said the building in the 1500 block of Sleepy Creek Road was destroyed. He said the building, valued at about $5,000, was used by Goldsboro Milling on a turkey farm.
About 15 Dudley firefighters answered the 1:15 a.m. call. Indian Springs assisted with three trucks and Arrington brought two. Each had about 10 to 15 volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a house fire that was believed to have been set Thursday night at 936 Sleepy Creek Road. When a neighbor returned home, she told deputies that she saw a small fire in the home. She put the fire out and notified authorities. No damage estimate was available. The home owner was listed as Douglas Ray Smith of Goldsboro.
Drug charges
Two people were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with two felony drug offenses after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Antonio Dubenton Howell, 37, and Ladonna Renee George, 26, were arrested after an investigation and search of their home on East Beech Street. Each was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana and copyright law violations.
Howell and Ms. George were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of unspecified secured bonds.
2 men charged
in break-ins
Two men have been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with multiple felony offenses in connection with residential break-ins in the southern end of the county.
William Allen Jackson IV, 18, of O'Berry Road, Mount Olive, and Richard Allen Smith, 21, of Smith Logging Road were accused of breaking into homes on Cricket Ridge, Shady Grove, Crows Foot and Baker's Chapel Church roads. The break-ins occurred between Oct. 10 and Oct. 26, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said.
Jackson was charged with five felony counts each of breaking and entering and larceny and one felony count of safecracking. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 secured bond.
Smith was charged with four felony counts each of breaking and entering and larceny. He was jailed in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond. He was arrested Nov. 3.
Jackson eluded arrest until Wednesday when was found in a friend's apartment in Greenville. While he was being processed in the magistrate's office, he escaped but was recaptured a block away after a short chase.
Some of the victims' property, including firearms, has been recovered, Brogden said.
Jackson also was charged with breaking and entering and safecracking by Mount Olive police Maj. Ralph Schroeder.
Greenville police assisted in the investigation and arrest.
Robbery charge
A teen-ager was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with the armed robbery of the Spur service station at 2000 N. William St.
Michael James King, 17, of Tinderwood Drive was accused of brandishing a silver handgun and taking the cash drawer with an unknown amount of money on Wednesday night, police Investigator M.K. Horstmann said. King was placed under a $20,000 bond.
Collision
A northbound driver was charged with a yield violation after a two-car collision Thursday at East Ash and North Taylor streets, Goldsboro police reported.
The driver, Cassie B. Scurry, 79, of Whitfield Drive, was not injured after her car collided with an eastbound auto that was driven by Marcellus Lanier Sutton, 82, of Jenny Lind Road, LaGrange. Damages were estimated at $8,400.
Firearms stolen
Seven firearms were stolen Thursday from a home in the 3100 block of Indian Springs Road, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Anthony Joseph Boudy Jr., reported the theft of a two rifles, three shotguns and two handguns. The weapons were valued at $1,910.
He also said two b-b guns, a wedding ring, other jewelry, three DVD players, movies, clothes and toys were taken. This property was valued at $1,144.
The thief had damaged a door to get inside.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A computer printer, a cable and food were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a truck window was damaged in the 100 block of Jessica Place, police said. The resident and owner, David E. Parsons, estimated the value of the stolen property at $123 and damage at $200.
*A bicycle and prescription medicine were stolen Thursday from a home in the 3100 block of Central Heights Road, police said. The thief may have damaged a door to get inside. The resident, McKinley Walker, put a $69 value on the bike. The value of the medicine was not known.
Missing
A 13-year-old Dudley girl was reported missing Thursday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Laquita Renee Darden of 116 Legion Lake Drive was described as black, 4-feet-2 and 100 pounds with black hair in an Afro ponytail and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, she was wearing a white jacket, a beige shirt, blue jeans and white shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
DWI charge
Alton Devonne Whitley, 44, of Harmony Circle was charged Thursday night by the Highway Patrol with driving while impaired and driving while his license was revoked. He registered .16 percent blood-alcohol content, the citation said. His car was seized because of a previous DWI conviction. His secured bond was set at $400.
