Teen indicted for hospital drug thefts

The 16-year-old son of a vice president of Wayne Memorial Hospital has been indicted by the Wayne County Grand Jury on eight charges relating to the theft of painkillers from the hospital.
Thomas Bradshaw II of Bradford Place is accused of stealing oxycodone, methodone and hydromorphone on July 7 and July 9. He was indicted on four felony counts each of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and possession with intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance.
Bradshaw, who was working as a junior volunteer at the hospital, is accused of using another employee's password to access a drug dispensing machine and then obtain the prescription painkillers.
The teen has been free on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
Bradshaw's father, Thomas Sr., has said his son was threatened by someone seeking to obtain the medication illegally. The son was told that if he did not get the drugs, he and his family would be harmed, the senior Bradshaw said.
18-count indictment
A 21-year-old man who fought with four sheriff's deputies on May 13 faces an 18-count indictment on felony assault charges.
Darryl James Sutton of Fisher Drive was indicted on three counts of assault on a law-enforcement officer inflicting serious injury and four counts of assault on a law-enforcement officer with a deadly weapon.
Sgt. Sherwood Daly, who was outweighed by about 90 pounds, suffered a leg injury during the scuffle. Deputies Chuck Arnold and David Rose and Lt. Darryl Overton also had minor injuries.
Sutton had been kicked out of a home in which he lived with his girlfriend and her mother in Rosewood Valley. Sheriff Carey Winders said the women had the legal right to remove the man if he was not paying any rent.
Drug indictment
The grand jurors indicted a man on two drug trafficking charges after he had been stopped Aug. 8 for not having a valid operator's license.
During the investigation, Sheriff's Cpl. Michael Cox and Sgt. Chris Worth said they saw the man driving erratically on N.C. 111 South. Cox recognized the driver and said he knew he did not have a license. When they searched his pickup truck, they found about 11 pounds of cocaine and $600.
Bertin Aviles, 24, of N.C. 111 South, Seven Springs, was charged with trafficking in cocaine by possession and by transportation. The cocaine was worth about $600,000 on the street.
Other indictments
The grand jurors returned 59 true bills of indictment during their November meeting.
Sixteen people were indicted on drug violations and 14 were indicted on such property crimes as burglary, breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
Nine indictments were handed up on such fraud charges as forgery, uttering and false pretense. Four people were indicted on sex charges, three each on traffic and weapons violations and two each on assault and common-law robbery charges. Some defendants were indicted on charges in more than one crime category.
Five people were indicted as habitual felons. If they are convicted of a fourth, non-overlapping crime, then their sentences would be lengthened significantly.
