Pikeville approves Northwest School sewer hookup

The Pikeville Town Board unanimously approved an agreement with the Wayne County Board of Education on Monday night to allow Northwest Elementary School to join Pikeville's new sewer system. The county would pay Pikeville a $42,000 fee to join the system.
Pikeville could use the line for its own purposes, but would then have to negotiate maintenance costs with the school board.
Mayor Herb Sieger said the decision would not affect residents waiting to join the town's sewer system.
"It will not hinder us, in any way, from our capacity," Sieger said. "Most of our kids go to Northwest. We're taking care of our own," he said of the decision. "If it's good for the school kids, it's good for our community."
Sieger said the sewer plant itself would be on-line early next year.
"We have virtually completed the sewer project," Sieger said. "The plant itself, we hope will be in operation next month."
Town commissioners also unanimously passed the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance. The ordinance, required for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the event of flooding, regulates building in flood plain areas.
Town Administrator Lonnie Graves said the town is still working with the Army Corps of Engineers to repair the federally regulated Blue Line Ditch around town. Graves said the ditch, intended to drain the southern part of Pikeville, has not been draining properly. "We're trying to examine all avenues," he said.
The board also approved a request by Danny VanDevender to designate about 70 acres along the new U.S. 117 corridor as a commercial shopping district.
In other business:
* North Carolina District 12 Sen. Fred Smith has announced he will have a town hall meeting with Pikeville residents at the Community Building on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
* The town board plans a hearing on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at town hall to discuss the process of condemning abandoned properties.
* The town will have a fall pick-up on Nov. 16. Town workers will collect appliances or anything that residents would not put out with their regular garbage. Paint and chemicals will not be collected.
