Volunteers cleaned up 13 miles of waterways

A total of 314 local volunteers cleaned 13 miles of Wayne County's waterways during last month's annual Big Sweep, said Barbara Byers, coordinator for the annual event.
Volunteers cleaned up trash at 17 locations and collected 85 bags of trash. Some discarded items were too large to bag, such as a golf cart.
Last year, 258 volunteers picked up 109 bags of trash at 15 locations on waterways around the county.
"One of the most positive things is that we can clean ditches and other areas because eventually, most of that trash makes its way down to a stream and then out into the ocean and endangers wildlife," said Ms. Byers.
Big Sweep is the nation's annual waterway cleanup held each October. It began as Beach Sweep in 1987.
