Man on moped
dies after
Oct. 16 crash
A Goldsboro man whose moped was struck by a pickup truck Oct. 16 at North William Street and Stronach Avenue died this week in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
The victim, William Charles McAllister Jr., 43, of North Carolina Street, had been charged by Goldsboro police with suspicion of driving while impaired and a stoplight violation.
No charges were filed against the other motorist, Thad Artis Jr., 53, of Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville.
Officer D.J. Truhan reported that McAllister had left a convenience store parking lot on the corner and then started across North William Street. Two witnesses told Truhan that McAllister had the red light and "went right through the light."
Artis, who was going north, had the green light, the report said. He swerved to the left and braked but could not avoid the moped, the report said.
McAllister was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, and then transferred to Pitt Memorial, where he died Monday.
Damage was estimated at $300 to Artis' 1998 Ford pickup and $500 to the 2001 Kymco moped, the report said.
The traffic fatality was second this year in Goldsboro.
15th arrest
A 15th person was arrested Wednesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad as a result of a year-long undercover drug investigation.
Jonathan Paul Comtois, 21, of Marie Avenue was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and sale and delivery of cocaine. His secured bond was set at $50,000. Comtois was arrested in the Onslow County Jail in Jacksonville, where he was being held on other charges.
Authorities have warrants against five more suspects. Fifty-two total charges were lodged against the defendants.
7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $46,100 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*An eastbound bicyclist was struck by a van and injured at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday on Royall Avenue near North Drive, Goldsboro police said. Jonah Lee Kornegay, 47, of Brogden Street, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The eastbound driver, Queen Faison Franklin, 47, of Banks Avenue, was not charged. Her car sustained about $50 in damages.
*A driver was injured and the sport utility vehicle that she was driving was demolished in a wreck at 7:35 a.m. Tuesday on Hood Swamp Road near Rodell Barrow Road, the Highway Patrol said. Denise M. Ellis, 35, of Mark Edwards Road, LaGrange, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with driving left of center. The report said the SUV had run off the right side, skidded across the road sideways, went off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The SUV was valued at $20,000.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 12:15 p.m. Monday at N.C. 111 and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Chris Waters, 17, of Hales Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was riding with Amanda Lee Jester, 16, of Hinnant Road, Pikeville. The other driver, Cary Andrea Davis, 30, of Claridge Nursery Road, was charged with improper passing. The report said Ms. Jester was starting to make a left turn onto Tommy's Road and Ms. Davis was behind another vehicle that also was making a left turn from the other direction and Ms. Davis passed it on the right and collided with the car that Ms. Jester was driving. Damages were set at $2,700.
*A Mount Olive driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 3:15 p.m. Monday on U.S. 13 near Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kevin Lavon Oates, 26, of East Franklin Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Karen Diane Guiliani, 49, of Sunridge Lane, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. After the impact, the Oates auto ran into the left ditch and overturned. Damages were put at $3,400.
*Damages were estimated at $6,300 in a three-vehicle wreck at 7:50 a.m. Monday at N.C. 111 and Spring Bank Road, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Dexter James Lawhorn, 21, of Lipscomb Lane, Dudley, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said the pickup truck that Lawhorn was driving collided with an eastbound car that was driving by Asbel Ramero Carreno, 34, of Forest Knolls Road. The impact sent Carreno's car into a stopped, southbound auto that was driven by Charles Norwood Anderson, 63, of Bridle Path Drive.
*Both drivers were injured in a two-car collision at 5:03 p.m. Monday at Old Mount Olive and Genoa roads, the Highway Patrol said. Divan Devon Pride, 31, of Boseman Lane, Dudley, and Robert Dean Lambert, 35, of Robert Avenue, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Pride, who was going north, was charged with a stoplight violation. Lambert was traveling west. Damages were fixed at $4,900.
*A passenger was injured in a one-car wreck at 10:20 a.m. Monday on U.S. 117 near O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Patricia Bryant, 38, of Larchmont Drive was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Alvin Bryant, 34, of Larchmont Drive, was charged with speeding after the car had struck water on the road, run off the left side, gone through the cable guardrail in the median and stopped in the median. The car was totaled. Damages were estimated at $3,750.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A compact disc player, food, clothes and $245 were stolen between Friday and Wednesday from an apartment in the 900 block of Carver Drive, Goldsboro police said. The thief had damaged two windows to get inside. The resident, S.M. Oates, estimated the value of the stolen property at $143, in addition to the cash. Damages were put at $150.
*A diamond ring and a DVD player were stolen Wednesday after a window was smashed at a home in the 100 block of Rex Court, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, K.M. Davis, estimated the value of the stolen property at $450 and damage at $200.
*A white Coyote dirt bike with a blue seat was stolen between Monday and Wednesday from a carport in the 100 block of Camellia Drive, deputies said. The owner and resident, Ronnie S. Syverson, put a $1,800 value on the bike.
*A single-axle trailer was stolen between Friday and Wednesday from a yard in the 100 block of Mobile Circle, deputies said. The owner and resident, James Carlton Earp Sr., said the trailer was worth $1,000.
