Twenty street-level and mid-level drug dealers were being sought today in the culmination of a year-long undercover campaign by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad.
Most suspects were charged with offenses dealing with cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine or the drug with the street name, "Ecstasy." The investigation led to the seizure of about $23,545 worth of those illegal drugs.
One suspect, Shannon Vontreal Scott, a former Goldsboro resident, was indicted on federal charges of distribution of crack cocaine.
The arrests followed a recent two-year undercover investigation that targeted Mexican drug kingpins who were supplying Wayne County with cocaine. Twenty-eight people were arrested last week in the investigation, more than $1.6 million in cash was confiscated, and more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana and 125 pounds of cocaine were seized.
"We worked the top end of the scale," Goldsboro police Chief Tim Bell said. "And now we worked the bottom and the middle levels. This is the bottom and the in-between."
"Unlike last week, these people were visually seen dealing drugs. I hope these arrests will make for a quiet weekend," Sheriff Carey Winders said.
Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad officers, Goldsboro police and Wayne County sheriff's deputies met at 5:30 a.m. today for a briefing on the roundup. They had arrested 13 people by mid-morning.
The investigation concentrated on street-level dealers but did lead to some major local dealers, officials said.
Fifty felony charges had been lodged against the 20 defendants.
Winders said people ask him why the suspects were not arrested one at a time. He explained that a roundup is used to arrest numerous people at one time because it is an undercover operation.
"We want the undercover officers to make as many buys as possible," Winders said. "If we arrested them after each buy, the undercover officer's identity would be revealed."
The Wilson and Duplin County sheriff's offices and the Mount Olive and Jacksonville police departments assisted in the investigation.
"We received excellent cooperation from these agencies to work the cases," Winders said.
The drug squad consists of Goldsboro police officers and Wayne County sheriff's deputies.
