MOUNT OLIVE -- A grandmother charged with murdering her granddaughter was to make a first appearance in court today.

Mount Olive Police officials said Carolyn Ann Boyette, 57, of East Slocumb Street in Mount Olive was charged with murder Saturday and held without bond until today's hearing.

Investigators said Ms. Boyette was apparently involved in an argument with her 21-year-old granddaughter Tiesha Faison early Saturday afternoon. The two women were at the home of Ms. Faison's great-grandmother across the street from where they live.

The argument apparently escalated into an assault.

Major Ralph Shroeder said this morning that Ms. Faison appeared to have been choked, but her body has been sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death.

He said there were signs of a struggle. He said there were very few people in the house at the time, and the argument appeared to be only between the two women.

When police arrived at the home, they found Ms. Faison unconscious on the floor. Emergency workers took Ms. Faison to Wayne Memorial Hospital, but they were unable to revive her.
