Quick response
leads to arrest
A quick response by Goldsboro police to a burglar alarm before dawn today at a convenience store led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man who was inside.
Officers L.T. Bethea and C. Burack arrived at 3:15 a.m. at the Kwik Stop Mart at 2000 S. Slocumb St. and saw a man running from the back of the store. The owner opened the front door and found that the ceiling had caved in. Officer J. Reinier then searched the building and found a man sitting in a chair behind the front counter.
The man, Tavaris Kelly, 23, of Aycock Street, was covered with tar paper and wood that matched the hole in the ceiling, the report said.
Kelly was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and injury to property. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Store employee
tied up, robbed
An employee of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket at 100 N. Lionel St. was found Wednesday night behind the store with a plastic store bag tied over his head, a Goldsboro police report said.
A store manager, David Kearney, told police that he went outside to look for Bryan Keith Davis, 21, at about 7:40 p.m. and found him on his back near a dumpster.
Davis said two black men put the bag over his head and took his wallet that contained personal papers. The stolen property was valued at $25. Davis was not injured. He could not describe the robbers.
Man sentenced
in shooting case
A 21-year-old Goldsboro man has pleaded guilty to two serious offenses in the New Year's Day shooting of another man and has been sentenced to about six to eight years in prison.
A charge of attempted first-degree murder against Cedric Levern Smalls of West Chestnut Street was dismissed during a plea arrangement.
Smalls was accused of shooting Rashid Tarif Adham Taymullah of North George Street in the chest at 1:15 a.m. Jan. 1 at 120 Vanderbilt Circle, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Taymullah was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated, admitted and later released.
Smalls was developed as the suspect. But he was not arrested until March 10 during a traffic stop by Sheriff's Deputy Aaron Cantwell on U.S. 13 South. He was indicted in July by the Wayne County Grand Jury.
Smalls pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury. He was sentenced by Wayne County Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell of Goldsboro to 75 to 99 months in prison.
A second man was arrested with Smalls. Patrist Ray Drake, 22, of Florence, S.C., was charged with felony possession of a stolen truck, possession of a stolen goods and resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty in District Court to three misdemeanors -- possession of stolen goods, larceny and resisting arrest -- and was sentenced to 90 days in the Wayne County Jail.
Man robbed
A man was robbed Wednesday at gunpoint by three Hispanic men in a home in the 300 block of Landis Road, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The robbers stole $3,200 worth of jewelry from the man's roommate, the report said.
Margarito Solis told deputies that he was sitting in his yard at about 1 p.m. when one suspect asked him if the other man were there. As they walked to the back door, two masked men came from around the corner of the house and approached Solis, the report said.
The first man put a gun to the back of Solis' head and ordered him to get down on the kitchen floor, the report said. The two masked men walked through the house.
The robbers took Solis' wallet with $50, a paycheck and personal papers, the report said. Three gold bracelets, two gold watches and 16 gold rings were stolen from the other man, Apolinar Garcia.
Crime of the Week
Two daytime residential break-ins on Sunday in southern Wayne County have been selected by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as this week's "Crime of the Week."
Forced entry was made at a home in the 100 block of Baker's Chapel Church Road, where a tool box and medicine were stolen. An hour later, tools, guns, jewelry and electronic equipment were stolen from a home and a shed in the 700 block of Shady Grove Road. In both thefts, the residents had been away only for a short time.
Anyone with information on these break-ins or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $16,400 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday at South Pineview Avenue and East Elm Street, Goldsboro police said. Michael Allen Radford, 35, of Rosewood Road and Christine Smith, 63, of Johnson Branch Road were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, but their conditions were not immediately available. Radford, who was going south, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Ms. Smith was traveling west.
*Three people were injured in a two-car crash at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday on North Center Street near Mulberry Street, police said. One driver, Ribhi Mohamad Kandeel, 50, of South Slocumb Street, and his passenger, Nour B. Allan, 16, of Stronach Avenue, and a passenger in the other car, Lynda Zopfi, 22, of Lily Place, were taken to the hospital, the report said, but their conditions were not immediately available. Kandeel, who was backing Form an angled parking place, was charged with a safe-movement violation and a license address violation. The other motorist, Karly Nicole Childers, 21, of Scott Hills Drive, was going north. Damages were set at $3,500.
*Two people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:30 p.m. Monday on Tommy's Road near N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Porter Bullock Barnes, 60, and his passenger, James Barnes, 44, both of Hooks River Road, were taken to the hospital, the report said, but their conditions were not immediately available. The other driver, Michael Blake Gurganus, 18, of N.C. 581 North, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. Damages were estimated at $2,900.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $3,880 worth of tools was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a N.C. Forest Service building on Claridge Nursery Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had smashed a window to get inside, the report said. The tools included three chain saws, two circular saws, two weed trimmers, a pole saw and a leaf blower. Damage was set at $150.
*An estimated $2,269 worth of property was stolen between Oct. 7 and Tuesday after a window was pried open at a home in the 500 block of Pikes Cemetery Road, deputies said. The owner, Cyrus Rose Talton of Pikeville, reported the theft of five hand-made quilts, a couch, a chair, a china cabinet, an end table, an antique trunk, a compact disc player, a turn table and 15 records, a coffee table, dishes and a shower curtain.
*Twenty DVDs, a DVD player, a watch and a remote control were stolen between Wednesday and dawn today from an apartment in the 300 block of North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro police said. The thief had removed an air conditioner to get inside. The resident, Robert Martin Sasser, said his property was worth $140.
Reward offered
Ray Hamilton of Wendy Circle is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the theft of his 2001 yellow Suzuki 125 RM dirt bike, a 1994 Yamaha 50 series dirt bike, a generator, a weed trimmer, a chainsaw, a crossbow and a set of old wheels.

Missing
A woman and her infant have been reported missing to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Cynthia Denise Dickens, 26, of 260 Kelly Springs Road, Dudley, was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 160 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light brown complexion. When she was seen last at 8 a.m. Wednesday, she was wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and black and pink tennis shoes.
The infant, Shana Dickens, 11 months, was described as black and 26 pounds. Anyone with information on their location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
