Fire calls
Patetown volunteer firefighters put out a truck fire and an outbuilding fire, but both structures were destroyed, Chief John Gardner said Tuesday.
A fire on Tuesday also destroyed a bailing shed near Fremont, Chief Donnie Wilkerson said.
A mechanical malfunction was blamed for the truck fire Tuesday on Stoney Creek Church Road. The truck, valued at $2,500, was owned by Rayborn Daw, who lived nearby. Seven Patetown firefighters responded with two trucks. The road was blocked for about an hour and a half until the truck could be removed.
A 10-by-10-foot outbuilding at 940 Saulston Road was destroyed Saturday after it was ignited by trash. The building, valued at $500, was owned by the resident, Brian Kearney. Thirteen Patetown firefighters responded with three trucks. Saulston offered mutual aid.
The cause of a fire at a shed at 193 Evans Farm Road was undetermined, Wilkerson said today. Fire fell on equipment and burned electric wiring. The shed, owned by Andy and Steve Evans, was valued at about $5,000, the chief said. Twelve Fremont volunteers answered the 12:59 p.m. call with five trucks. Pikeville assisted.
5 hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $23,500 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A car was demolished and the driver was charged after the auto made a wide right turn and crashed into a power pole and a parked truck at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday at West Mulberry and Carolina streets, Goldsboro police said. Tarvarus Kenyata Peacock, 26, of Summerwind Drive was not injured, but he was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving. The car that Peacock was driving was valued at $3,000. Other damages were estimated at $1,700.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 3:57 p.m. Tuesday on West Grantham Street in a construction zone near Elizabeth Street, police said. Tomeka Yavonka Davis, 26, of Coleman Lane, LaGrange, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where her condition was not immediately available. The driver of a tractor-trailer truck, Kelvin Aldnese Bunch, 39, of Lancaster Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $600.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:04 p.m. Tuesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive, police said. One driver, Robert Gideon Bouck, 60, of Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Samira Jade Jackson, 23, of Fallin Boulevard.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 12:05 a.m. Sunday on N.C. 581 near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Angela Alexander Thomas, 40, of Evelyn Circle, Dudley, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where her condition was not immediately available. No charges were filed after she said she swerved off the right side to avoid a deer and overcorrected the steering and the sport utility vehicle then ran off the left side and overturned into a gas pump. The SUV, valued at $4,600, was demolished.
*Two people on a motorcycle were injured in a wreck with a pickup truck at 5:50 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 117 near Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Christopher Nelson Corbin, 28, of Fayetteville, and his passenger, Jennifer Crutchfield, 22, of Bluffton, S.C., were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where their conditions were not immediately available. The driver of the pickup, Matthew Eric Hutchinson, 20, of Bridle Path Drive, was charged with an improper lane change. Damages were put at $2,100.
*A passenger was injured in a wreck at 4:56 a.m. Sunday on Indian Springs Road near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Juan Santiago, 35, of Green Valley Drive was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where his condition was not immediately available. The westbound car ran off the right side and overturned into a field, and the driver fled, the report said. The car, valued at $6,500, was demolished. It was registered to Jose Donaldo Cruz Ordonez of Cabin Creek Road, Seven Springs, the report said.
Store robbed
A man bought a bag of corn chips Tuesday at a store, then reached in the cash drawer, stole an undetermined amount of money and fled, according to a Goldsboro police report.
A woman clerk told officers that a black man, about 30 years, entered the Dollar Tree store at 916-A N. Spence Ave. at about 3:10 p.m. After grabbing the cash, he fled toward Royall Avenue.
The suspect was described as being 6 foot 1 inch and 250 pounds with a heavy build, black hair and brown eyes. He wore a blue shirt, a navy blue jacket with white stripes, jeans and tennis shoes.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Gunshots on Tuesday night damaged a wall of a home in the 1000 block of Dollard Town Road, sheriff's deputies said. No one was injured. The resident, Tim M. Dawson, estimated damage at $600.
*A gas blower was stolen between Oct. 5 and Tuesday after a lock was removed from a barn in the 100 block of Ditchbank Road, deputies said. The resident, Lea Maxwell, put a $110 value on the blower and lock.
*A diamond cluster ring was stolen between Oct. 10 and Tuesday from a home in the 100 block of Fairway Drive in Walnut Creek, deputies said. The resident, Paul Bennett, said the ring was worth $1,500.
*A shotgun and a rifle were stolen Tuesday from a gun cabinet at a home in the 100 block of Farmview Lane, deputies said. The resident, Daniel Glenn Allen, said the firearms were valued at $500. No sign of forced entry was reported.
