Goldsboro's newest shopping center continues to grow as Bed Bath & Beyond opened its doors Tuesday afternoon in Berkeley Commons.

The home furnishings store opened for business just before 4 p.m. after final inspections by fire marshals and city officials.

Store manager Julie Rowe said the store opened about two weeks after the building was ready. "It takes five days to fixture it, and 10 days to open," she said.

The company hired 70 people to help in the opening process, and was able to retain about 25 permanent associates, Mrs. Rowe said.

"Everybody that's wearing an apron, we hired here," she said.

Mrs. Rowe said Goldsboro was a logical step in the company's long-range plans.

"We are looking to get into the smaller markets than Raleigh or New York City," so that's why Goldsboro was on the list. "Rocky Mount is on the list, and Greenville has been open for three years."

The Goldsboro store is the 21st in North Carolina.

Bed Bath & Beyond is the second Berkeley Commons store to officially open. Ross Dress for Less opened in September, and fashion retailer T.J. Maxx plans to open Oct. 23.

Bed Bath & Beyond is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m to 9:30 p.m, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
