Lawmen chase stolen SUV

Wayne County Sheriff's deputies and Goldsboro police are searching for a suspect that led lawmen on a chase Monday morning before abandoning a stolen vehicle and running away.
Sgt. Chris Worth attempted to pull over a 2001 Jeep Cherokee just before noon on U.S. 70 east, near the Village Green Shopping Center. The driver did not stop, so Worth immediately processed the license plate information.
"I ran the tags, and it came back stolen," Worth said.
At that point, Worth began the chase.
The driver turned around in the median at Walnut Creek, and headed west. Another deputy was on a routine traffic stop along U.S. 70 west, so the driver turned and entered a field, coming out on Lake Wackena Road. The driver then crossed U.S. 70 again, turning left into Creekside subdivision.
"He went all the way to the back, ran in a yard and jumped the fence," Worth said.
"The whole thing lasted about three minutes. He went through that field and almost hit a chicken house twice, because he can't drive," Worth said.
The driver was described as a black man in a black coat.
The Jeep had been stolen from the parking lot of Brooklyn Pizzeria on Spence Avenue last week, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Deputies were assisted in a search for the suspect by Highway Patrol troopers.
"We're following up on several leads that we got," Worth said. "We had a dog on the team, and he tracked him, and another dog on regular patrol tracked him, but we never did find him."
Goldsboro police are investigating the vehicle theft.
