Drug charges
Two Goldsboro men were arrested Tuesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and Goldsboro Housing Authority police and charged with felony drug offenses in separate incidents. Four others also were arrested and charged with drug violations.
*Darryl Eugene Ford, 32, of Astor Court was arrested at Leslie and Corney streets and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a vehicle for keeping and selling marijuana and cocaine. He also was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. Ford was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,500 secured bond.
*Richard Lee Best, 45, was arrested at South Slocumb Street and Wayne Avenue after a citizen's tip and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine. Best, who did not disclose a home address, was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
*Two others -- Isaiah Williams, 56, and Sergio Garcia, 42, of U.S. 117, Pikeville -- were arrested by the Drug Squad and Housing Authority police at Williams' home on North Virginia Street and charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The police Special Weapons and Tactics team assisted in the arrests.
*A fifth man, Charles Leon Speight, 42, of Mercer Street, was arrested Tuesday by police and charged with possession of cocaine. He was jailed in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
*A sixth person, Brandon Devon Smith, 21, of Willow Road, Dudley, was arrested Tuesday by Wayne County sheriff's deputies on Westbrook Road and charged with possession of cocaine. His secured bond was set at $1,000.
Pack house fire
FREMONT -- A fire of an unknown cause on Tuesday night destroyed a pack house with 180 bales of rolled-up hay on Black Creek Road.
Fremont Fire Chief Donnie Wilkerson said volunteers reached the fire within six minutes of the 8:40 p.m. call but the building already was engulfed in flames.
"We had to watch it burn," the chief said. "When we put water on it, it aggravated it. We made a decision to let it burn."
Wilkerson said he did not know how the fire started because the pack house had no power.
The pack house, owned by Ballance Farms, was valued at $25,000, and the contents were valued at $20,000, the chief said.
Twenty-four Fremont firefighters responded with five trucks. Eureka, Faro and Pikeville volunteers assisted. They remained until 2:45 a.m. to make sure the fire was out and to finish salvage work.
Man robbed
A man was assaulted and robbed Tuesday night in the 700 block of West Elm Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Nathan Patrick Roberts, 24, of Goldsboro told officers that he was driving west at about 7:30 p.m. and felt something hit the passenger side of his vehicle. He stopped and got out to check the damage, the report said, and then a black man put something in Roberts' back and demanded his money.
Roberts turned around and swung at the suspect, but a second man twice struck Roberts' head with a brick, the report said. Roberts fell to the ground and was stabbed in the thumb, the report said. The suspects then grabbed Roberts' phone, a ball cap and $20 and fled. The phone and cap were valued at $280.
One suspect was described as black, about 25 to 30 years old, 6-feet-2 and 145 to 160 pounds with a small build and black hair in an afro. He wore a gray shirt and blue jeans.
Break-in charges
Two people were charged Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with breaking into a vehicle.
Taletha Rebecca Kearney, 24, of Lisa Drive, Pikeville, and Ian Michael Schaperjahn, 24, of Lynchburg, Va., were charged with breaking and entering of a vehicle, larceny, possession of stolen property, forgery and uttering. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $15,000 secured bond.
Ms. Kearney and Schaperjahn were accused of stealing a purse with a wallet and a checkbook, then writing and passing forged checks at area businesses, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said.
Six hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $16,500 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,800 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday at South John Street and Dixie Trail, Goldsboro police said. One driver, James Henry Bowden, 55, of Elm City and his passenger, James M. Bowden, 17, Wayne Memorial Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Betty Jean Barnes, 39, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 12:34 p.m. Tuesday on North Spence Avenue near Cashwell Drive, police said. Sylvia Monique Evans, 18, of Athens Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Evans, who was leaving a parking lot, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said her van collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Kenneth Lee Boyd, 37, of Peachtree Street.
*Three people were injured in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run wreck at 12:01 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 117 near Genoa Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Leroy Randolph Jr., 29, and his passengers, Shaliyah Randolph, 11 months, and Sholonda Williams, all of Airport Road, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. A pickup truck was leaving a parking lot and collided with Randolph's northbound auto, the report said. The other driver fled. The pickup was registered to Victor Manuel Arriago Roblero of Smith Trailer Park Drive, Dudley, the report said. Damages were put at $5,700.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A thief smashed a window, inflicting about $300 in damages, in order steal $8 from an office at Mooring Automotive Group at 4126 U.S. 70 East, Goldsboro police said. The break-in occurred between Monday and Tuesday.
*Clothing, a weed trimmer, a fan and garden tools were stolen between Sept. 11 and Tuesday from a barn in the 100 block of Rachel Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Evelyn G. Alston of Goldsboro, put a $805 value on the property. The thief had cut a padlock to get inside, the report said.
*A red and white 1989 Dodge 250 truck and several firearms were stolen Tuesday from the 100 block of Sunflower Drive, deputies said. The resident and owner, William Emil Fischer, said the truck was worth $3,000.
House fire
A bedroom fire on Monday at 110 Somerset Drive caused about $300 in damages, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The cause of the fire at the Deena Marie Stutts home was referred by Thoroughfare volunteer firefighters to sheriff's detectives for a further investigation.
Woman charged
FREMONT -- A 26-year-old woman has been arrested by Fremont police and charged with one felony count each of first-degree burglary and breaking and entering and two misdemeanor counts of larceny.
Shana Denise Hutchins of Falcon Drive, Pikeville, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
