City Council denies Berkeley rezoning

The Goldsboro City Council on Monday night denied the rezoning of property at the intersection of Berkeley Boulevard and Lisa Lane to accommodate a business.
Residents of the neighborhood had opposed the zoning, saying it would create increased traffic and noise.
Dewey L. Powell had sought the zoning to be able to sell a house to an insurance agent for use as an insurance office.
At a previous council meeting, neighbors had protested the requested rezoning from residential to office use.
Fran Kasey has lived in the neighborhood for 33 years and said she was pleased to hear the decision.
"We're very pleased that the council was sympathetic to our cause," she said. "We want to keep it a nice neighborhood and want to thank the city for this."
The Planning Commission made a recommendation to deny the rezoning. Powell, who had said the traffic would not increase as a result of the rezoning, was not present for the decision.
Neither Powell nor his attorney could be reached for comment.
