Two men robbed
Two men were robbed by a masked gunman before dawn today at an apartment in the 200 block of Hereford Drive, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Ashton Wayne Johnson, 25, of Baltimore was robbed of $70, and Clifford Donald Doster, 21, of Mount Olive was robbed of $12 at about 12:15 a.m.
The victims reported that they heard a knock on the door and when they opened it, two black men, one armed with a pistol, demanded money. The gunman stuck the pistol in the throat of one victim, the report said. They grabbed the cash and fled.
The gunman was described as wearing dark clothing and a blue bandanna. The other suspect was wearing a red shirt.
Drive-by shooting
A man from Dudley was wounded Friday night in a drive-by shooting in the 1300 block of South Slocumb Street, a Goldsboro police report said.
Damien Tavares Robinson, 26, of Alert Cable Road was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for arm and facial injuries and released, a spokeswoman said.
Robinson told officers that a four-door black car pulled alongside his vehicle, the suspect fired one blast from a shotgun and the car fled south. Three black men, about 20 years old, were in the suspect vehicle, the report said.
Mobile home fire
A mobile home at 154 Carriage Road was destroyed Sunday night in a fire caused by smoldering ashes from an earlier cookout, a Goldsboro Fire Department official said.
The resident, Mike Beique, was awakened by a neighbor and scrambled outside unhurt to escape the blaze, Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said.
The hot coals had been put in a box next to the home and they ignited the fire, Langston said. When 17 firefighters answered the 9:34 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car, they found half of the home engulfed in flames. The fire was controlled within 15 minutes. They needed almost two more hours to put out the fire and finish salvage work.
The home, owned by Faye Norman of Goldsboro, was valued at $2,200. The contents were valued at $1,000.
Kitchen fire
An electrical short in a refrigerator set off a kitchen fire Saturday that damaged a home at Surry Lane and Woodland Church Road, officials said.
The unidentified owner was moving into the home, Assistant Mar Mac Fire Chief Tommy Baker said, but had not put furniture in it.
"They were lucky," Baker said, "that they didn't have their stuff in it."
Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the home and $1,000 to contents. The home was valued at $75,000.
Mar Mac and Thoroughfare volunteer firefighters answered the 6:30 p.m. call and needed about an hour and a half to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,900 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $11,500 in a two-car collision at 7:45 a.m. Friday on New Hope Road at the entrance to the Food Lion parking lot, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Richard Dale Best, 52, of Salem Country Lane, was charged with improper passing. The report said Best was passing a third car in the center turn lane and the car that he was driving collided with a car that was leaving the parking lot. The driver leaving the parking lot was Kelli Nicole Schatzman, 17, of Bayleaf Drive. The third auto, driven by Rebecca Barclay of New Hope Road, suffered minor damage.
*Damages were estimated at $8,500 in a two-car collision at 6:11 a.m. Friday on DuPont Circle near Oak Street, police said. One driver, Chris Raynor, 21, of Kornegay Street, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the car that he was driving struck a parked auto. The other car was registered to Lillie Marie Jones of DuPont Circle.
*Two passengers were injured in a one-car wreck at 5:50 p.m. Friday on Kelly Springs Road near Parker Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jessie Synger, 16, and Heather Darden, 16, both of U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Their driver, William Shawn Davis, 16, of Hope Boulevard, Dudley, was charged with driving left of center. The report said the car crossed the center line, the driver overcorrected the steering, the car ran off the right side, the driver again overcorrected the steering and the car ran off the left side and overturned. The car, valued at $2,800, was demolished.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a collision with a cement truck at 3:20 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 111 and Indian Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. Carol Z. Goss, 57, of East Pine Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Goss, who going east, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The southbound cement truck from Clinton was operated by James Byron Farland, 35, of Albertson. Damages were set at $6,100.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A generator, three chainsaws, a blower and a weed trimmer were stolen Sunday from a garage, a barn and a truck in the 400 block of Trappers Wood Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, William Andrew Williams, put a $5,860 value on his missing property.
*A red 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck, loaded with spraying equipment, was stolen Sunday from the owner's business in the 200 block of West Ash Street, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Mark Jason Leon, said his vehicle was worth $17,818 and the equipment was worth $1,500.
*A television, a .22 caliber rifle, furniture, jewelry, a DVD player, a video cassette recorder, a compact disc player and a crib were stolen between Friday and Saturday from a home in the 200 block of Mobile Circle, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, D.G. Felton, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,080 and damage at $100.
*A gold bracelet, a gold necklace and a gold ring were stolen between Thursday and Sunday from a home in the 500 block of Watery Branch Church Road, deputies said. The resident, A.M. Anselmo, said the jewelry was worth $1,300.
*About $500 was stolen between Sept. 26 and Saturday after a door was damaged at a home in the 4000 block of U.S. 117 Alternate South, deputies said. A gun cabinet also was damaged. The resident, Kenneth Dean Brown, set damages at $550.
*A gas heater and a two-ton jack were stolen between Wednesday and Saturday after a window was broken at a home in the 300 block of Durham Lake Road, deputies said. The owner, Ronnie Williams of Dudley, estimated the stolen property's value at $410 and damage at $100.
*A stereo was stolen between Wednesday and Saturday after a car window was smashed in the 1300 block of Old Grantham Road, deputies said. The stereo was valued at $225. Damage was put at $100 to the car, owned by Annie Boyette of Seven Springs.
