Arson charges
filed in house fire
Three men from Dudley were arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with second-degree arson in connection with the burning of a mobile home near Dudley.
One of the men, William Charles Kohls II, 25, already was in custody. He had been arrested, charged and jailed in lieu of an $80,000 secured bond on sexual assault charges. His additional secured bond on the felony arson charge was set at $7,500.
Brian Kohls, 19, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Nathaniel Bruce Britt, 18, was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
The home at 741 Pecan Road was destroyed before dawn Monday in what authorities called a suspicious fire. The resident, Kohls' estranged wife, was not home but arrived as firefighters were putting out the blaze. The home was valued at $16,000, and contents were valued at $3,000, officials said.
The men were arrested by Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris after an investigation by the Wayne County Fire Marshal's Office and the Arrington Volunteer Fire Department.
Dryer fire
An malfunctioning dryer caught on fire Thursday night at O'Berry Center on Old Smithfield Road and caused about $5,900 in damages at Building 363, a Goldsboro fire official said.
The building was evacuated, and the residents were moved to an empty building without incident, Lt. Wade Johnson said.
"When we arrived, we saw smoke," Johnson said. "We went inside, and they found it quickly in the laundry room."
The dryer was totaled, a light fixture was damaged and carpet was ruined, Johnson said. The room also had smoke damage.
Sixteen firefighters responded to the 10:26 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about an hour to investigate the cause, ventilate the building one room at a time and finish salvage work. The entire building was valued at $250,000, and contents were valued at $50,000.
Drug charge
A 27-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense, three other felonies and three misdemeanors.
Police also discovered that Larenz Earl Suggs of Brock Street had used another person's name when he was arrested.
Suggs was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, financial identity fraud, forgery and uttering. He also was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, driving while his license was revoked and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Suggs was accused of using the name of Yuante DeBois Smith, 27, of Creech Street on Wednesday when he was arrested. Charges of felony and misdemeanor marijuana possession against Smith were dismissed Thursday in Wayne County District Court. The charges were published in Wednesday's News-Argus. But prosecutors discovered that another person had used Smith's name.
Drugs at school
A teenager was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense at Goldsboro High School.
Steven Anthony Broadhurst, 17, of Rawlings Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
9 hurt in wrecks
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $25,545 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured in a two-car collision at 2:45 p.m. Thursday on Cashwell Drive near North Berkeley Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. Caitlin Elizabeth Hildebrand, 17, of Price Road, Seven Springs, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Hildebrand, who leaving the Hardee's restaurant parking lot, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other driver, Siu Kien Lee, 40, of Cashwell Drive, was going east on Cashwell Drive. Damages were set at $4,500.
*Two people were injured in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run crash at 10 a.m. Thursday at North Herman Street and Park Avenue, police said. One driver, Carrie P. Worrell, 58, of Hood Swamp Road, LaGrange, and her passenger, Donna Lynn Pridgen, 42, of Longleaf Avenue, were released after emergency-room treatment. They were going south, the report said, and an eastbound car turned left in front of them. After the collision, the other driver backed up and fled. Damage was put at $500 to the car that Ms. Worrell was driving.
*Two people were injured in a two-car wreck at 12:58 p.m. Thursday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Cox Boulevard, police said. One driver, Sharon G. Wilson, 56, of Charlotte, and her passenger, Wanda C. Bjork, 53, of Sedgefield Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, James Timothy Smith, 42, of Newsome Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Smith had started to turn from Cox Boulevard and his car collided with the southbound auto that Ms. Wilson was operating. Damages were fixed at $1,200.
*A driver was injured in a two-car collision at 11:40 p.m. Thursday on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway near West Ash Street, police said. Jonathan Andrew Hall, 25, of Southwest Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Mildred Katherine Game, 62, of Country Run Lane, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $1,700.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Pecan and Mitchell roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Genara Velasquez, 22, of Old Mount Olive Road, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist, Audleia Alvarez, 28, of Greenville, had stopped to make a left turn, the report said.
*A bicyclist was struck by a car and injured at 5:45 p.m. Sunday on Indian Springs Road near Pineview Cemetery Road, the Highway Patrol said. Charles Andrew Daniels, 64, of Fairway Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Dorothy B. James, 74, of Drummersville Road, Seven Springs, was charged with improper passing. Damages were put at $1,145.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $10,500 in a wreck at 5:59 p.m. Sept. 23 at N.C. 55 and Dobbersville Road, the Highway Patrol said. Seth Walter Best, 71, of Paul Hare Road and Brent Thomas Long, 19, of Alton, Va., were released after emergency-room treatment. Best, who was going south, was charged with a stop-sign violation after the truck that he was driving collided with the westbound car that Long was operating.
ATM stolen
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*An automatic teller machine was stolen before dawn today after a door was damaged a convenience store near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. Two black men were seen putting the ATM in a car at 3:50 a.m. at the Genoa Mart at 659 Genoa Road. The machine was valued at $3,000. Damage was set at $300.
*Ten boxes of candy and 20 bottles of a sports drink were stolen Wednesday from a concession stand at Spring Creek High School, deputies said. The thief had damaged six cabinet doors and a drink machine to get the property, the report said. The property was valued at $413. Damage was put at $1,400.
