Drivers finally got some good news about the ongoing paving project on Ash Street -- the end is near.

By the end of next week, road crews, night-time delays and confusing detours should be gone, said Kevin Bowen, an engineer with Apac-Atlantic Inc., the company in charge of the paving.

"We're hoping that with a few more nights of work we'll have Ash Street paved," Bowen said.

For the last few days, road crews have been paving one lane of the street per night. However, recent delays have slowed progress slightly, officials said.

Paving will continue through the weekend and drivers should expect detours and lane closures from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. until all lanes have been completed. The company is then expected to begin paving the intersections.

"After the street is finished, we're anticipating one additional week to pave the intersections," Bowen said. "And then we're finished."

While many drivers say they have had close calls on Ash Street during the paving process, Goldsboro police say no accidents have occurred as a result of the project.

Furthermore, no claims have been filed with the department by drivers whose cars have been damaged by sub-standard road conditions.
