Mount Olive students awarded scholarships

MOUNT OLIVE -- Several Mount Olive College students have been awarded scholarships.

Allan Pangburn of Dudley has been named the 2005 Braswell Teaching Scholarship recipient and also received a $2,500 merit scholarship. Pangburn is a graduate of Southern Wayne High School and is the son of Scott and Phyllis Pangburn.

Pangburn passed the high selection criteria including having a 3.2 high school grade point average, being in the top 25 percent of his class, and having a minimum 1020 SAT.

Merit scholarships were also presented to Brandon Burleigh of Goldsboro and Karen Thornton of Mount Olive, each in the amount of $2,500. The recipients are selected on the basis of grade-point average, class rank, and SAT scores, and are renewable annually.

Burleigh, a graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, is the son of Robert and Angela Burleigh. Ms. Thornton's parents are Dean and Sandra Thornton. She graduated from Southern Wayne High School.

Janet Brock, daughter of Raymond and Janice Brock of Mount Olive, was named to receive a $4,000 Honors Scholarship. The scholarship, renewable annually subject to meeting specific academic criteria, are awarded based on acceptance, high school grade point average, class ranking, an essay, and an interview.

Ms. Brock is a graduate of North Duplin High School.

A $2,000 Leaders Scholarship was presented to Tracy Blackmon of Goldsboro, daughter of Larry and Jacqueline Crawford. She is a graduate of Alamogordo Senior High School.

The scholarship is renewable for up to four years provided the student is enrolled full-time and completes the components of the leadership program.
