Evacuated students can get tuition break at WCC

Wayne Community College is providing tuition exceptions for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Any evacuee who has already paid community college tuition in his or her home state is eligible for a tuition waiver for the second fall term, and evacuees who enroll for the first time will pay the N.C. Community College System's in-state tuition rate.
Displaced students will be asked to provide documentation or an affidavit of their enrollment in one of the affected community colleges in Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama. First time students will need to prove that they lived in one of the affected areas.
Documentation of enrollment can be a class schedule or a receipt from the original college. Proof of residency can be a driver's license or a piece of mail with the student's name and former address.
WCC President Ed Wilson said the college recognizes traditional records will not be available in many cases, but the college is going to make it as easy as possible for the students who survived Katrina.
"They have suffered enough," he said. "We want to do what we do best to help them get back on their feet."
An accelerated eight-week term begins Oct. 17. Registration will be held on the college's main campus in Goldsboro from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 5 and 6. For those students who will need financial assistance, financial aid forms and information requirements have been tailored to work around the loss of documentation.
