The Foundation of Wayne Community College recently kicked off its annual fund drive with a lasagna lunch served to 200 faculty and staff members.

While the ultimate goal of the drive is to raise money for students attending the school, Foundation Executive Director Jack Kannan said community involvement is equally important.

"Our main goal is to develop a relationship with the community," he said. "And to tell the story of what we're about, make some friends and build as many relationships as we can."

The fund drive has begun for faculty and staff. The community involvement component starts Oct. 19.

Members of the foundation board set a goal of $310,000 for 2005-06, nearly twice the amount raised during last year's campaign.

The drive features the college's annual golf tournament June 13 at Lane Tree Golf Course, an event that has raised more than $500,000 since it began 14 years ago. This year, the event raised $51,000.

The money raised will be used to fund scholarships provided through the foundation to students with various needs, including those not eligible for Pell Grants, college officials said. Last year, the Foundation awarded 236 scholarships worth nearly $158,000.

In addition to the scholarships, the Foundation provides funding for campus projects and cultural programs for the community.

Kannan said his hope is to use some of the money raised in this campaign to provide programs geared toward opening the eyes of both students and community members to educational programs and activities outside of the college classroom.

"What we do here is all about the students," he said. "We want to show through our giving that there are other things to education besides the classroom."
