Proceeds from a golf tournament planned for Thursday will be used to expand space and services at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

The 11th annual Kitty Classic Golf Tournament will be at Walnut Creek Country Club, with tee times of 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Up to 36 teams can participate, said Lee Gray, events coordinator at 3HC, which owns the hospice center.

The tournament is a benefit for the Kitty Askins expansion fund, she said.

"We hope to double our bed size from 12 to 24," she said. Office space and counseling rooms are also included in the proposal.

The grand prize for the winning team will be the Ivan Cohen Award, she said, named for a member of the 3HC Development Board.

"Cohen was a tireless advocate for Kitty Askins," Ms. Gray said. "He was very quiet about his work as he went about raising money for Kitty Askins."

Cohen died Aug. 1 after a brief battle with cancer, she said. His wife, Kathy, was offered Cohen's seat on the board and will continue his work.

The winner's trophy will be housed at Kitty Askins, with names of the winning team added each year. Team members will be presented small replicas of the trophy.

To participate, call Ms. Gray at 735-1387, ext. 1113.
