House fire
The cause of a fire that caused about $35,000 in damages to a house at 1203 Harris St. on Tuesday was being investigated by Goldsboro police.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said the fire started in the rear wood deck and was spread quickly because of a strong wind and low humidity.
"Upon our arrival, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the rear of the structure," Whaley said.
Nineteen firefighters answered the 3:25 p.m. call with four engines, a ladder and a command car. They controlled the fire in 19 minutes but remained for almost two hours to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The one-floor, brick home, owned and occupied by Cleveland Johnson, was valued at $50,000. Contents were valued at $12,000. Damage was estimated at $25,000 to the home and $10,000 to the contents.
Firefighters also responded at 1:30 a.m. today to a vehicle fire at Herbert's Repair Shop in the 100 block of Westbrook Road. The 1992 Isuzu station wagon, valued at $2,000, was destroyed. It was owned by Tammie Lynn Ward of Pink Hill.
Money found
When Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Robinson responded to a loud-music call Sunday on Deer Meadow Drive, he saw a car speeding from the area. He then stopped the car and found $26,242 inside.
By Tuesday, Robinson said no one had claimed the money. A total of $12,007 was found in a purse taken from the car's registered owner, Shameka Braswell of Maple Street, $9,000 was found under the right front passenger seat and $5,235 was found in the glove box.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Tuesday by authorities and charged with felony drug offenses.
Zachary Lamont Draughon, 31, of West New Hope Road was arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with two felony drug offenses in his home after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Draughon was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 secured bond.
Cocaine with a street value of $2,220 was seized. The Goldsboro police special task force assisted in the search of the mobile home.
John Keith Hudson, 53, of New Hope Road was arrested by Goldsboro police on Weaver Drive and charged with possession of cocaine and driving while his license was revoked. He was released from custody on a $2,000 unsecured bond.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $15,000 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at North Spence Avenue and an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, Goldsboro police said. A southbound driver, Justin Bryant Lancaster, 19, of N.C. 581 North, Kenly, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said the sport utility vehicle that Lancaster was driving had collided with an eastbound car. The other driver was Rufus Wilson Brown, 76, of Gloucester Road.
*A driver was injured at 6:45 a.m. Friday when her car ran off Talton Road and slammed into a tree near Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. Lisa Nicole Westbrook, 23, of Long Leaf Road, Princeton, was rushed by the Princeton Rescue Squad to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, where her condition was not immediately known. Ms. Westbrook's eastbound car ran off the right side, came back on the road, crossed the center line, then ran off the right side again and struck a tree, the report said. Her car, valued at $6,000, was demolished. No charges were filed.
*The driver of an all-terrain vehicle was injured in a wreck with a parked sport utility vehicle at 6:50 p.m. Saturday off Lakewood Avenue near South Lincoln Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Dominic Toomer, 19, of Lakewood Drive, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Toomer was charged with exceeding a safe speed after he lost control of the four-wheeler and it ran off the right side and struck the SUV. The SUV was registered to Gary Lamont Barnes of Sheryl Circle. Damages were put at $2,500.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A white 2001 Dodge 1500 pickup truck, with two handguns inside, was stolen Tuesday from the 1300 block of N.C. 222 East, deputies said. The owner and resident, Jerry Leland West, said the keys had been left inside. The truck was worth $19,000, and the handguns were worth $1,100.
*A stereo system, a 12-gauge shotgun and two knives were stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the 1200 block of N.C. 222 East, deputies said. The owner and resident, Anthony Cecil Head, put a $4,170 value on the stolen property.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A television, fishing gear, a video cassette recorder and stereo equipment were stolen between Aug. 28 and Tuesday after a car window and the ignition were damaged in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, police said. The owner, Donnie Cartrell Phipps of Goldsboro, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,120 and damages at $400.
*A bed, a television, a drill, video-game equipment, a microwave oven, a compact disc player and four DVDs were stolen between July 31 and Tuesday from an apartment in the 300 block of Randall Lane, police said. The resident, Dwayne Mackey, put a $2,070 value on his property.
*A gray, four-door 2003 Ford 150 pickup truck was stolen between Thursday and Tuesday from the 600 block of Prince Avenue, police said. The owner and resident, Ethan Webb, said the truck was valued at $17,000.
*A power metal cutter was stolen between Thursday and Tuesday from Myco Supply Co. at 711 W. Ash St., police said. The cutter was worth $3,200.
Drugs seized
A 13-year-old Spring Creek High School student was charged Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Another student had tipped off school officials about the marijuana. School officials and the school deputy found the marijuana in a book bag. The student was not identified because of age.
Missing
A 28-year-old woman was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Ciata Syeh of 111 Spring Branch Road was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 3:30 p.m. Friday, she was wearing a T-shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
