Price named outstanding N.C. commissioner

Wayne County Commissioner Atlas Price Jr. has been named Outstanding County Commissioner of the Year by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.
Price received the award Friday at the organization's annual conference in Charlotte.
Officials said he was recognized for his years of work on behalf of all the state's 100 counties and especially for his efforts in protecting the state's military bases during the latest Base Realignment and Closure process.
Price, 74, has been heavily involved in the state organization, serving on numerous steering committees and as a member of the NCACC board of directors. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Risk Management insurance pool sponsored by the state association.
Price, who is the at-large representative on the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, has served on the county Board of Commissioners from 1986-1992 and from 1999 until the present. He served as chairman of the board of commissioners for a number of years and was a member of the county Board of Education from 1976-1986, which he also served as chairman and vice chairman.
A native of the Pricetown area of Wayne County, he serves District 5 on the board of commissioners.
Price is a retired farmer and businessman, who for many years operated a tobacco warehouse. He and his wife, Carolyn, have a son, A.J., and three daughters, Karla Griffin, Kelly Griffin and Allie G. Price.
Price is the son of the late Atlas Price Sr. and Aleath Dail Price.
He is a member of the Elks Lodge and the Woodmen of the World and the United Methodist Church.
