Court costs go up

The cost of being convicted of a crime went up today in North Carolina, the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office announced.
Criminal District Court costs rose $10 to $110, Clerk Marshall Minchew said. The increase will be charged on all cases assessed or collected on or after today, regardless of issue or trial dates.
The increase is the first in the state since Oct. 1, 2002, when court costs rose from $90 to $100.
The only exception to the new court costs will be for defendants who are charged before today and who sign a waiver to forgo a court appearance. They will be charged the old $100 court costs and any applicable fine.
The court costs for seat-belt violations also went up today from $50 to $75. The fine for a seat-belt ticket remained $25.
New court costs for Superior Court cases will be $135 for indictments only, $220.50 for felonies and $232.50 for misdemeanors appealed from District Court.
Civil court fees also went up by an average of $10.
