Thieves get equipment
in ballpark break-in
Thieves broke into an equipment room at the Mar Mac Community Ballpark on Old Grantham Road and stole about $7,470 worth of baseball equipment, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The stolen property included 25 batting helmets, 30 chest protectors, 10 pairs of shin guards, 10 catcher's helmets, five catcher's mitts, 144 baseballs, 20 uniforms, four bags of equipment and a public address system.
The thieves had pried off a board between Aug. 13 and Saturday to get inside the building, the report said.
Once inside, they also damaged eight state tournament trophies, 12 smaller trophies and 100 bags of candy. Damages were estimated at $500.
Man awakened,
robbed of $450
A man was awakened before dawn Saturday by a knife-wielding man and robbed of $450 and his wallet with personal papers, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
Toby Leslie Mooring told deputies that he answered his doorbell at his home in the 5100 block of N.C. 222 West, Kenly, at about 5:45 a.m. When Mooring opened the door, he saw an armed black man who demanded his money. The suspect grabbed the wallet and fled in a blue pickup truck toward Kenly.
The robber was described as being in his 30s, 5-feet-11 and 180 pounds with short black hair. He wore a dark T-shirt and pants.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $20,625 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $15,625 in a two-car crash at 5:33 p.m. Friday at North Virginia and West Holly streets, Goldsboro police said. Patricia Marks, 34, of East Beech Street and William Charles Herring, 21, of Old Smithfield Road were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. Ms. Marks, who was going south, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Herring was heading east. The impact of the crash sent the cars into a stop sign and a power pole.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 6 p.m. Wednesday on Rosewood Road near Charlie Braswell Road, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph Valinzo Davis, 41, of Parks Road was released after emergency-room treatment, a spokesman said. The other driver, Emily Elizabeth Farmer, 16, of Ruby Belle Way, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A rifle, two pairs of tennis shoes, video-game equipment and $250 were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a window was smashed at a home in the 100 block of Dell Drive, deputies said. The resident, Vontreal Martez Brown, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,183 and damage at $50.
*A silver, four-door 2003 Kia Spectra was stolen between Aug. 10 and Friday from the 400 block of Frank Street, Goldsboro police said. The owner and resident, Rita Jane Burks, put a $12,000 value on the car.
Missing
A 15-year-old Goldsboro boy was reported missing Friday by his mother to Goldsboro police. Kenneth Edward Mace of 1659 Tommy's Road was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 145 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light complexion.
When Mace was seen last at 2:50 p.m. Friday, he was wearing a gray tank top, blue jeans and black and white athletic shoes. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
