Man found dead
Cleveland Ray Lewis, 61, was found dead at his apartment on E. Beech Street when his employer went to check on him. According to reports, Jacob Scott of Jackson Auto Sales became concerned when Lewis did not report to work for several days. When no one answered at Lewis' apartment, the landlord opened the door. Lewis was found on the bedroom floor. Goldsboro police are investigating.
Break-in
Officers responded to an alarm early this morning at The Light House Food Mart on Herman Place. A citizen reported a break-in, and advised police that he saw two black youths on bicycles break the front glass and enter the store. Officers discovered the door broken, but no one inside. Other officers found two bicycles while scouring the vicinity. Further investigation led to the apprehension of three black youths ages 14, 15 and 16. Damage to the door was set at $750.
Assault
Mamie Ruth Staten of East Mulberry Street, told police officers that she was struck by a man she knows. Ms. Staten was treated by emergency service technicians, and a warrant was issued for the man.
Investigations
Wayne County law enforcement officers are investigating these reports.
*A 2004 Yamaha YZF-R6 motorcycle was reported stolen from an apartment complex at 700 N. Spence Avenue. James B. McCloskey Jr. described the motorcycle as blue with a black windscreen and high-mount exhaust, carrying with N.C. license plate 3C2853. The motorcycle was valued at $8,000.
*Three employees of Gambro Healthcare on Wayne Memorial Drive reported items missing from unsecured lockers yesterday. Jillian Conley-Besso, Deborah Mewborn and Ronda Hicks reported $150 in cash and a Wachovia debit card missing.
*Carrie Hardy of Handy-Mart on Highway 70 East reported that someone stole $42.97 worth of beer from the store.
Accidents
*A 1995 Pontiac overturned after it struck a driveway culvert on the 2300 block of Salem Church Road. Thomas Max Deloach of Pikeville was listed by law enforcement officers as the driver. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $7,000.
*Guadalupe Heredia, 18, of Pikeville was charged with failure to yield after she attempted to make a left turn from Sunburst Drive on to Royall Avenue, officers reported. The 2000 Chevrolet driven was struck by a 1999 Suzuki driven by Helen Sykes, 55. Total damage was set at $7,500.
Correction
In Tuesday story about drugs seized during a raid by officers of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the amount of cocaine seized was incorrectly listed as 500 kilograms. The actual amount was 5 kilograms, or about 11 pounds, investigating officers said today.
