City will get money to widen roadway

It wasn't the million dollars the city was hoping for, but Goldsboro will get more than $200,000 in federal money to help widen Berkeley Boulevard.
A representative from Rep. Walter Jones' office notified city officials that Congress has allotted $236,800 in federal transportation funds to help with the project.
City Councilman Chuck Allen, who is also a member of the city's transportation committee, said that the city had been seeking $1 million in federal funds for the past two years for the project.
"We've asked for several years, but haven't gotten anything until now," Allen said. "I don't really know too much more about this money, other than it all has to be used for the widening project."
The widening of Berkeley Boulevard from Royall Avenue to the city limits has been a priority of city and county officials for several years.
The City Council recently approved the purchase of land at the intersection of Berkeley Boulevard and Royall Avenue to help facilitate the widening.
Allen said he doesn't know when the Berkeley Boulevard widening project will begin.
