Robbery tries
Two women were the victims of attempted holdups Tuesday night, according to Goldsboro police reports.
A man displayed a handgun and threatened a woman from Burgaw at the Berkeley Mall parking lot. Cheryl McGregor, who works for a Goldsboro engineering firm, told officers that she was getting in her car with packages when a black man approached her, raised his jacket and showed the handgun.
She quoted the suspect as saying, "Let me tell you something. I'm gonna kill you."
Ms. McGregor said she ran away and ducked behind vehicles in the parking lot and the suspect fled toward Sears.
The suspect was described as about 6 feet 1 inch tall and 160 pounds with a slim build and short black hair.
The other woman reported that three black women approached her at 8:05 p.m. in the 3500 block of Central Heights Road.
Crystal Denise Moore of Goldsboro said she was walking to a store and the suspects demanded her money. Ms. Moore was assaulted, but she ran away without giving up any cash, the report said. No other descriptions were offered.
Gas fills room
A technician accidentally set off the fire suppression system late Monday night at Case Farms, filling the chicken frying area with carbon dioxide gas and forcing the evacuation of part of the plant, officials said Tuesday.
The frying area was not damaged, but volunteer firefighters had to monitor the air and reset the fire alarm before the air handlers could be turned on, Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rodgers said. The entire process was time-consuming, he said.
Mar Mac and Dudley volunteers also responded to the plant at 330 Pecan Road.
Vacant home fire
A vacant home at 704 Mills Road was heavily damaged Monday night in a fire that was referred to authorities for further investigation.
"We feel like we know what it was, but we don't want to get into that right now," Grantham Fire Chief Ted Grantham said Tuesday.
The home, owned by Donna Mills of Mills Road, was valued at $75,000. Damage was estimated at $30,000 to the home and $15,000 to the contents, Grantham said. The contents were valued at $30,000.
Thoroughfare volunteers assisted at the scene. Emergency Services official Delbert Edwards, the Thoroughfare chief, assisted in the investigation.
Driver injured
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $11,600 Tuesday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Mall Road, Goldsboro police said. Adrienne Clark, 26, of Harding Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist, Zay Harold Jones Jr., 41, of U.S. 117, Fremont, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said he was leaving a parking lot and collided with Ms. Clark's northbound sport utility vehicle.
*Damages were estimated at $5,600 in a two-car crash at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Central Heights Road, police said. One driver, Joan S. Davis, 59, of Renee Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Andrea Hernandez Gonzalez, 25, of Greenville.
4-wheelers stolen
Two all-terrain vehicles were stolen between Monday night and Tuesday from Performance East at 1306 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro police reported.
A 2004 Polaris, valued at $4,000, was owned by Kevin Johnson of Goldsboro, and a 1995 Polaris, valued at $1,000, was owned by David Howell of Wilson.
The thief had cut a fence to get inside the yard, the report said. The suspect also tried to steal two other four-wheelers, but they were recovered behind the business.
Wayne County law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*A television and a cable remote were stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 600 North William Street, police said. The resident, Calvin A. Hammond, estimated the value of his property at $220 and damage at $75.
*An estimated $2,110 worth of damages was found Tuesday at two rental mobile homes, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Vanessa Willis of Seven Springs, reported that floors and windows of a home on Willis Lane and the door of a home on Piney Grove Church Road had been damaged.
*A rental 1990 Ford F-350 pickup truck was taken May 6 from Hawkins Service Center at 615 E. Ash St., police said. The truck was valued at $7,500.
