Repo man says
he got right SUV
Mike Lancaster, the owner of Interstate Search and Recovery of Smithfield, says his driver did repossess the right sport utility vehicle last week.
"We didn't get the wrong SUV," he said Monday. "We got the right one."
The driver had picked up a 2001 Ford Explorer from a home on Mallard Drive. The owner, Tonia Susan Geigher, had told Wayne County sheriff's deputies that she had just spoken with Nissan Credit and was advised that the vehicle was not scheduled for repossession.
Ms. Geigher said she tried to stop the driver and took his key but the driver then grabbed her, tried to throw her to the ground and then pulled a gun, the deputy's report said.
Lancaster denied that there was a confrontation and said his two drivers do not carry guns.
"We never got an order to stop the repossession," Lancaster said. "We acted in good faith. No gun was displayed. Nissan Credit said it made a mistake. She signed a liability release and was glad to get her vehicle back."
The driver returned the SUV.
Identity theft
A Mount Olive man has been the victim of identity theft, particularly his name and Social Security number, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
David Velasquez Roblero, 30, of Sedberry Lane said through his lawyer that his identity had been used by someone else to obtain employment, a bank account and credit in Georgia. Roblero has worked at Case Farms. But now he also has been charged federal income taxes on money that someone else had earned, the report said.
Roblero's lawyer, Will Bland of Goldsboro, said the Internal Revenue Service said a report to law enforcement on the matter would be helpful in resolving the matter and would enable credit reporting agencies to watch out for fraudulent use of his identity.
An employment agency in Atlanta told Bland that a person who was paid wages was not Roblero although he had used Roblero's Social Security number.
Roblero, a native of Guatemala, also has worked for Carolina Turkeys and has lived in the Mount Olive area for about five years.
Fraud charges
A 26-year-old man, wanted by Wayne County sheriff's detectives, was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with 10 felony fraud offenses.
Tavaris Dion Sutton of Creech Street was charged with five counts each of trafficking in stolen identities and financial identity fraud and one misdemeanor count each of communicating threats and assault on a female. Sutton was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $87,500 secured bond.
Sutton was accused of stealing numerous checking account numbers from his place of employment and buying goods and services, Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Thomas R. Flores Jr. said.
Kitchen fire
A kitchen fire on Monday night caused about $1,000 in damages to a duplex apartment at 207 S. Jefferson Ave., a Goldsboro Fire Department official said.
The occupant, Jennifer DeVincenzi, "was frying chicken, and the grease got away from her," Lt. Rob Loreman said.
Twelve firefighters responded to the 7:45 p.m. alarm. The apartment building is owned by Zena Brinson.
Robbery try
As a woman employee was opening a check-cashing store Monday, a man pointed a gun at her face and demanded money, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The employee at Cash Express at 501 E. Ash St. sounded the burglar alarm, and the suspect fled without any money, the report said.
The robber was described as black, about 25 years old, 5-feet-4 and 150 pounds with a thin build. He wore black jeans, a white T-shirt and a white hat.
7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $29,900 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Four people were injured and a car was heavily damaged in a wreck at 3 a.m. Saturday on Friendly Drive near Rosewood Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Ashley Nicole Hunt, 18, of Turner Swamp Road, Fremont, and her passengers, Christopher Peeler, 17, and William Jernigan, 18, both of Radford Drive, and Josh Gurley, 17, of Muriel Hooks Road, were treated and later released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Hunt was charged with reckless driving. Damage was set at $8,000.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 6:55 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 13 near King Road, the Highway Patrol said. Juan Vela Morua, 46, of Newton Grove was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving. The report said the car ran off the left side, struck a ditch, crossed a driveway and struck a tree. Damage was put at $2,000.
*An eastbound car collided with a deer at 7:45 a.m. Friday on N.C. 55 near the Lenoir County line, the Highway Patrol said. Damage was estimated at $5,000. The driver, Annette Kearney Hall, 52, of Country Club Drive, Mount Olive, was not charged.
*Damages were estimated at $5,400 in a two-vehicle collision at 12:30 p.m. Thursday on Woodland Church Road near Five Points Road, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, Sylvia Renee Hagans, 17, of U.S. 117 Alternate South, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation. The report said Ms. Hagans had turned into a driveway in an attempt to make a U-turn and collided with a following sport utility vehicle. The other motorist, Mar Mac Fire Chief William G. Harrell, 52, of Nancy Drive, Dudley, was driving a sport utility vehicle for the volunteer fire department.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $9,500 in a collision at 3:36 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Dora W. Evans, 75, of Country Club Road, Kenansville, and Joseph Brandon Jones, 24, of Gainey Drive were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Evans, who was going north, was charged with a stoplight violation. Jones was traveling east.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A window air conditioner, a knife set and two grills were stolen between Wednesday and Monday from a home in the 200 block of Quaker Drive. The owner, Norman Baylorn of Wake Forest, put a $395 value on his property. A couch and chair set and a couch and love seat set also were taken but were recovered at a nearby home, the report said.
*A disabled burgundy, four-door 1995 Plymouth Acclaim was stolen between Wednesday and Monday from U.S. 117 South. The car, valued at $1,500, was registered to Troy Allen Krieg of Goldsboro.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $18 in coins was stolen Monday after a van window was smashed in the Ashley Plaza parking lot in the 200 block of North Berkeley Boulevard. Damage to the Winn-Dixie van was set at $200.
*A riding Sears Craftsman lawn mower with a 42-inch cut was stolen between Sunday and Monday from a yard in the 200 block of North Virginia Street. The resident, Johnnie Maurice Brown, said the mower was worth $1,000.
