The Tuscarora Boy Scouts Council has launched an aggressive recruiting campaign for Cub Scouts.
All of the first- through fifth-graders who sign up to join the Cub Scouts in the council's three districts, Torhunta, Neusiok and Coharie, will be invited to attend a free race on Sept. 17 at the Southern National Speedway off N.C. 581 in Kenly.
The boys will start arriving when the gates open at 5:30 p.m. and begin registering at 6 p.m. The race begins at 7:30 p.m. All Scouts in uniform will get in free. The Wayne, Johnston, Duplin and Sampson Cub Scouts who were registered at Round Up will be admitted at no charge with temporary membership cards.
The Scouts' families will be admitted at a discounted price of $10 per adult rather than the regular $15 and $6 for ages 7 through 12. Children age 6 and younger get in free. The Scouts and their families will sit together in a place reserved for them.
The Round Ups will be Aug. 29-30 and Sept. 1 throughout the council. Training sessions for recruiting have begun in Wayne County, and sessions are set for 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield and for 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the Warsaw Elementary School.
