Four-member lifeguard teams were judged by YMCA and Red Cross lifeguard instructors. Prizes were awarded for first-through-third places. The purpose of the competition, according to Cindy Umstead, was to "increase awareness and visibility of the Red Cross and YMCA lifeguards throughout the county."
